Fast Track C400 Left Side not playing audio on Outputs 1/2
I noticed some other people having a similar issue, but not exactly. When I try to play back audio from my DAW (Cakewalk), Channel 1 just stopped working. However, I could hear both outputs through the headphone port in front. I saw another user had just the opposite problem. In my troubleshooting I was able to eliminate the headphones, the cables, the studio monitors and the DAW as the source of the problem (the same thing happens when I try it in other apps such as Groove or Windows Media Player). I also tried reinstalling the latest driver, which didn't help.
So I disabled outputs 1/2 in Cakewalk and switched my cables over to outputs 3/4. Works perfectly on both left and right, except now the headphones are getting no signal PERIOD on either side. Does the headphone port only monitor the signals coming out of 1/2? If so, is there any way to change that? I only ever use 2 outputs at a time, but I also need the headphones to work when recording vocals or a mic'd acoustic instrument. So, I need to either figure out what's going on with outputs 1/2, or figure out how to get the headphone port working with 3/4. I know that the Fast Track C400 is no longer supported by Avid, nor has it been for quite a while, so they haven't issued a new driver for a long time. I was wondering if (and where) a firmware update might be available that might fix this problem. Or what else I might try. Thanks in advance for any help or advice. Re: Fast Track C400 Left Side not playing audio on Outputs 1/2
You could buy a simple monitor controller, and use only the 3-4 outputs, eliminating the HP output on the Fasttrack. I suspect it's locked to the 1-2 main outs. And to me, this sounds like hardware failure on channel one.

Re: Fast Track C400 Left Side not playing audio on Outputs 1/2
So, would I go from Fast Track 3/4 to the monitor controller, then from there to my studio monitors?

Re: Fast Track C400 Left Side not playing audio on Outputs 1/2
Yes. And use the headphone output on the controller. If the 1/2 output is broken, this is one way to solve the problem. And it shouldn't cost you too much.

Or get a new interface.

Re: Fast Track C400 Left Side not playing audio on Outputs 1/2
I started shopping around for an inexpensive monitor controller and they aren't as inexpensive as you might think (at least not by my budgetary standards). Then it occurred to me: why not use my 4-channel headphone amp? I never use more than two sets of headphones at a time anyway. So I ran outputs 3/4 into the stereo input of my headphone amp (luckily I had a spare 2 mono to 1 stereo cable kicking around). Then I plugged my studio monitors into outputs 1 and 2, still leaving outputs 3 and 4 for headphones. Works perfectly. I don't know why I didn't think of this before. I feel kind of foolish, but at the same time I am happy to have everything working again the way I want it to.
Thank you for your suggestions, Ben. While I didn't follow your advice exactly, it did lead me to this solution.

That sounds just great. No reason this isn't a good, working, free, solution to your problem, and no reason it should mean any loss of sound quality.
