FWIW, B&H Photo Video Tax Department sent me notification that they've reported the amount of my purchases to the State of Colorado Department of Revenue "to assist [me] in complying with Colorado Use/Sales tax regulations."

It ain't just Newegg. I suspect most or all companies will start doing this to avoid legal trouble.

Let's try this again - I tried replying but the old bitbucket ate it.

With B&H I'm lucky because I live in NJ and they moved their warehousing to NJ and that's considered having a presence in the state even though it's not a store so I get charged sales tax. With the free priority shipping I get charged because of the dollar amounts I send with them I actually make out better with the tax payment.

What I'm wondering about and mentioned earlier is what about Sweetwater? They charge no sales tax. While I like them and have gotten great service from them in the past this whole retroactive tax deal has gotten me scared. If they rollover for the states - ooh boy

I think the issue (with Newegg) and others will be the ones that continue to refuse to charge taxes. From the information I gathered, it seems if Newegg would have just started charging tax, this would not have went anywhere, but they refused (I could be wrong here).
The other major music online retailers outlets do not charge tax either assuming they do not have a state presence. Sweetwater is small time though compared places like Newegg. I cant imagine states having the resources to handle all of these small online businesses.

Prior to them building the distro center in my state (2015?), I never paid sales tax.
If you notice, I am in the last of the states they list that they started taxing. It has only been about a year for us.

Last I saw, roughly 50% of the U.S. had Amazon prime accounts. I don't think the states would near enough resources to even try and go back retroactively and bill users. This would also put the politicians and their friends under the spotlight as well and take money from there pocket. That reduces the risk even more

I'm in Canada, so not directly affecting me, but it sounds like this is tax that should have been paid all along anyway, just that the purchaser had to make the effort of paying it. Just because folks were getting away without paying it (no blame, I'd have done the same!) doesn't really make NewEgg the bad guy here..

Also, no one likes to pay taxes, I get that, but without tax there'd be no roads, schools or in enlightened countries - health care (not starting a debate about health care, just kidding around)

I don't think Sweetwater is small time compared to Newegg. And it's certainly not a small time online only retailer either. Has a larger national presence than Newegg. Then again we don't know both businesses's sales figures either.

Sweetwater is probably one of the top 5 largest musical instrument dealers in the world. I've been to their place many times as its only a couple hours from me. They are YUGE!

CT is flat out broke, so no doubt they are trying any and all scams possible to raise revenue in the State. Years and years of fiscal mismanagement have finally caught up to them. They'll squeeze anyone one they can for any amount at this point! But we can't let a situation like this go unchallenged. I suspect there will be lawsuits and some high power organizations getting involved.

Newegg Revenue: 2016 - 2.65 Billion $ (2500 employees)
Sweetwater Revenue: 2017 - 619 million $

You can not really compare selling music eqpt which is a bit of niche market (thats in and been in decline with larger competition for a smaller market share) in comparison to the largest online retailer for the IT/computer market that serves products for every business in the country and most households. Newegg also has multiple warehouses in different states (west coast, midwest, east coast). I don't even see how its close and no way they could have a larger national presence.

I personally get better prices from some west coast stores and have not used Sweetwater much in quite a few years. I get most annoyed at their phone calls every couple months. I have driven right by there place multiple times in Indiana, just usually in a rush and never stop.

CT should be embarrassed by this. With 2 of the most profitable casino's in the world, the fact that they are broke just shows how irresponsible the state gov actually is
