Scan the last few pages for more details, but a socket 2011 hexacore rig should be your target IMO. But even a 2011 quad should be a major improvement.

The first page of this thread is the closest thing I can find to a comprehensive set of info on what parts work best with ProTools, but the information is 2-3 years old, which as you all know, is ancient history in the computer world. Is there anyone who's build a pc recently that "knows their stuff" that could point me in the right direction?

I'm a mix engineer currently running a custom pc built in Jan '08 with an mBox 2 mini. I would just upgrade my memory for now as I prepare for PT 11, but I'm running DDR2, which makes that prospect difficult, and I'm also regularly taxing my system as it currently is, so I'm thinking a new build is the way to go. I have a friend that knows how to build computers, but doesn't know anything about ProTools or compatible parts, so that's where I could use your help. I'd like to shoot for the $1000 mark, but I've seen the 'ultimate' machine is around $1500, so we'll see. Thanks in advance!
a bit more specific, look for the sandy bridge 3930k based builds. these have insane power and been extremely stable. mykhal c and I both have our build specs on here as they are a bit different. those posts would be about nov-dec of 2012, so a few pages back. there a handful of others after that as well.

The article you link to was written before the newest series of sandy bridge processors were released which are quite a bit faster and have a far better track record for working w PT than the Ivy bridge series. You need to catch up on your research, that article is 11 months old which if you to by moores law, makes it archaic!!

Track record??? If you guys just moved with the times and recommended the IVY with the onboard graphics (Intel 4000) that might not have been the case. Oh and Watercoolers and SSD's.....

Not you have to know that I am smirking here as I type. Due the internet, original intent is hard to convey. Maybe this can help You have to have the enemy on the internet, I have a black hat and a 3 day stubble...with whisky breath...

You guys have done a great service for many people on this hobo thread. It might have cost people a few hundred more than they needed...

Moved with the times?? Some of us, myself included are usually on the edge and are the ones spec'ing this stuff out! If you notice, this thread was started around Kris and I in 09 when the i7's were released, and when the Opteron was released and the new bad boy on the block it was based on Shan and I back in 05 or so.

The Ivy's have had a high failure rate among even advanced users. The onboard graphics issue is what is thought to be causing it and possibly issues related to some of the new power saving features. Onboard graphics has always been spotty for PT.

On top of that, speed wise, the newer Sandy Bridge series is faster all around than the current Ivy lineup. Haswell is on its way and its all soon to change!!

Why would you want people to build an inferior machine??

for the Opteron builds, the processors alone were 900$...... a piece and you had to have 2 of them!!! after that, they ALL seem cheap!!!!

Hi guys. Im trying to build a decent computer to run Pro Tools 11 and some video editing software such as Premiere and Aftereffects. Also I want to use Ableton live and do a bit of electronic production as well. My budget is 1400 and I have created a rough build but it is slightly more expensive then I thought.

Here it is:
CPU: Intel® Core™ i7-3930K Six-Core 3.20 GHz 12MB Intel Smart Cache LGA2011 (All Venom OC Certified)

HDD: 2TB (2TBx1) SATA-III 6.0Gb/s 64MB Cache 7200RPM HDD (Single Drive)

MEMORY: 32GB (4GBx8) DDR3/2133MHz Quad Channel Memory (G.SKILL Ripjaws X

MOTHERBOARD: (4-Way SLI/CrossFireX Support) GIGABYTE X79-UP4 Intel X79 Chipset Quad Channel DDR3 ATX Mainboard w/ Ultra Durable 5, 7.1 HD Audio, GbLAN, 4 Gen3 PCIe x16, 2 PCIe x1 & 1 PCI

SOUND: HIGH DEFINITION ON-BOARD 7.1 AUDIO

VIDEO: NVIDIA GeForce GTX 670 4GB 16X PCIe 3.0 Video Card (EVGA Superclocked)
