I have a perpetual protools 12 licence with no subscription.

So If I take an annual subscription out I get free updates and support for the year and if I don’t renew I will still be able to continue using my protools software up to the latest update I stopped paying at. As I have a perpetual licence?

It’s so confusing.
No, you got it wrong.

You have a perpetual license and you may or may not have active support plan. Even if the support plan is not active you can continue using your software, but will not get any updates you might need. In that case, just reinstate your support plan and you get new updates as long as your support plan is active. This is to go with your perpetual license.

If you subscribe (rent) then you can use the software as long as the subscription is active but when expired then no go.

Well, yea.. Support Plan is kind of "update subscription" if you like, but it is tied to your perpetual license that will continue to work even if your "update subscription" a.k.a. Support Plan expires.

Subscription is renting the software. Once expired, software will not launch.

Be careful with the confusion of "support plan" vs "subscription"...

If you buy the support plan then you will get a year of upgrades and your perpetual license will become whatever the latest version is when you stop payment.

If you "crossgrade" to a subscription I believe you loose your perpetual license when you stop paying. Maybe someone else can clarify that...

Yes, if you crossgrade you surrender your perpetual license and get discount on subscription. If you choose to keep your license you just pay for new subscription instead of support plan.
