Default What would be the best way to do this automation...

So Ive been experimenting with different techniques for volume automation. The technique I used in the past was volume pedal but most times I needed to tweak it anyway with the pencil.
So the question I have is what would be the best way to accomplish this using just write automation? To give you an idea of what I mean....

The problem with writing automation of this kind in protools is it takes forever to get the groove right and that's the issue I have; the groove, and not being able to use a more specific grid to feed off. You can quantize notes to certain grooves but not automation nodes. What would be the best approach to this do you think?

Sounds like a compressor 'pumping'. Try a compressor sidechained off the Kick .Adjust the attack, release and threshold until you get the desired effect.

Yeah, I think it sounds like a pumping compressor too using the kick as the sidechain trigger. Of course, if you have the money to spend, the One Knob Pumper from Waves Audio is nifty little plug-in for only $80 bucks. One of the nice features on it is that you can set the timing and phase of the effect. Timing in meter, like 1/4 or 1/8 etc, and phase is 0, 90, 180, -90, -180. You can get some interesting rhythmic effects playing that. And the big knob is the equivalent of dry/wet. Its a great little tool for getting these kinds of effects.
