Tekserve, Macmall

both usually have older stock after new models are released.

That being said, I have a brand new 15 inch latest gen and havent had an issue doing multi track records and mixes using both a Lynx Aurora TB and a Focusrite Saffire. I run Pro Tools 12 HD

But don't depend on anyone having NOS (new old stock), especially a machine that last came out in 2012.

Actually refurbs from the Apple online store are a good deal and can save you money. Be aware that the MBP models from about the Retina era and onwards are not end user upgradeable as to ram or hard drives. You'll have to buy what you want from the starting gate.

I've been going down dead end streets. You both have given me a few leads. Thanks.

I have found an Avid qualified computer from the Apple refurbished department. A mid 2014 Macbook pro quad core i7 haswell 8GB ram for £979. I will use external memory to supplement the low ram. I was recommended to use 16GB ram minimum though.

I realised after I posted a reply that external storage does not affect the internal ram. Oops. I will buy a refurbished with 16GB ram

I also checked Tekserve and Macmall. Their laptops are cheaper. I should have added that I live in the USA. If I were to import from the US. The import charge would take the price roughly to the same as buying in the UK. Thanks.

To answer your question, a late 2014 MBP with 16 GB RAM and a quad i7 will work great.

Did those models ship with a fusion drive? I can't remember. Fusion drives are problematic for Pro Tools, but it is apparently quite easy to split it into separate partitions for SSD and spinner.
