Default Dae error 87, help needed urgently !

Hi!

We've got a serious problem with our XP/Mix3-
system: Today system started to throw DAE error
87's. We could play back our sessions (24bit/48kHz)
fine, but when mixing back to ProTools, the system
refused the play back just recorded files (=mix).
When the new mixfile was removed, whole session
could play back over this point normally ? It was
not possible to listen the newly recorded file
in AudioRegions list (alt+click) also. However, we
tried to import back the mixfile, and it played fine
in Import Audio- dialogue window !! So the mixfile
was Ok, I guess.

We have been using this system now over a month
with great success, but suddenly these problems
started. The same cards were previously in a
Mac based system.

All our files are originated from Tascam MX2424's
and are live recordings. Files are transferred
from Scsi drives to our Fibre Channel storage, Nexan Ataboy (1,6TB). We've got about 600MBytes
filled, so it's not an option to "buy a new
drive"

The only thing that was added to the system recently is a Radikal SAC 2.2 - controller.
There are not any 3rd party plugins, only
DigiRack stuff.

I checked also the answerbase, but I don't think
that drive is too slow (it's a very fast
drive) nor fragmented, because we use a very
long audiofiles (live stuff) ..

Strange thing is that the system worked beautifully
and was not even near of it's performance limits ...

Other details about our ProTools:

HP XW 8000, 3.0Ghz Xeon, 1 Gb- ram, scsi-drive
Nexan Ataboy Fibre Channel storage
Atto Fibre Hostbus adapter
PT mix3 / 5.3.1- editor, AdatBridge&2x888i/o
2 network adapters (1*Gb/s, 1*100Mb/s)
Firewire card
Win XP Pro/SP 1

Any info ? Digi ?

Thanx,

Antti

I don't think FiCh recording is supported. Althorugh it may be way faster than SCSI data transfer, PT is very sensitive to momentary reductions in transfer speed.
We are recording most of our sessions to IDE-drives, but occasionally, DAE-errors similar to yours occur. Try recording to your SCSI-drive instead, then move your session.
The problem might also be your chipset and processor, not supported to my knowledge....

Good luck!

Hi again !

Ok, system is working again
FibreChannel- drive WAS terribly fragmented, so
defrag (took about 9 hours!) cured the problem.
Why the FC-drive was so framented, is still a
mystery, because we work with big continuous
files (about 600 MB/track). I'm not an IT-
expert, so I have not a glue why this happens ...

Justin, thanks for your suggestions !
It's true FC- is not supported, but many professional
facilities uses it, especially in post area where,
AVID's and Protools are connected to same media.
So, it's not a new thing to Digidesign also. It's
the ony sensible way to store insane amounts of
media IMHO. Also HP xw 8k is not supported, but
it's really hard to find a qualified fast
computer to protools. I think that Digi should
qualify some newer computers also to the Mix-
series ! HP xw 8k with mix3 is a very stable system
anyway !!

Just because your files are big does not mean they are written without gaps on your hard drives. You should always keep your drives defragmented for best performance. I used to have a MIX system before I upgraded to HD2 and if I am remembering correctly, the MIX system was not too efficient with writting data to disk. After recording many tracks, I constantly had to defragment because my drives had hundereds of fragments. HD systems are much better at writting to disk.

Yep,

This might be true, bigger files can be fragmented from the beginning. Our Fc-drive is
formatted to NTFS, and to my knowledge this
filesystem should take care of itself ?

Speaking of difference between HD and Mix,
regarding read/write to/from disk, aren't
they same ? I think that Mix / HD - cards are
only handling i/o and signal processing tasks, so
basically they are clever digital mixers
inside your computer. All read / write- operations
are handled by Protools software, which is
same for all hardware platforms ? Digi ?

If HD systems are better in those disk i/o
tasks, we should then consider switching to
HD. Otherwise we don't need it now, because
it's used only as a multitrack recorder/player
and editor.

best rgds,

Antti

I store my PT files on an external hd and the program on my C drive (HP using win xp) I backed up my files on to a 500 g portable drive and bounce the wave files at 16 bits to "MY MUSIC" folder and get the DAE error 87 message while bouncing and playback. The track I am trying to bounce is 2:27 in length and at !:36 it crashes. I have tries manipulating the Palybeck CPU usage to the bare minimum and unplugged all external devices other than the one I use for the file (ext hd).

I have even moved all files from the ext hd, formatted and defrag'ed it as well and the same (long process) of defraging my C drive with the Program on in.

I have even uninstalled and reinstalled the software and delted "trial" plug ins.

I had recorded 4 tracks without issue but when it was time to bounce the fourth, that is when the trouble began.

How can I resolve this issue?
