Default Control 24 Pre-amps!

How's the quality of the Control 24's pre-amps?
Is it honest?
I'm considering buying a Control 24... I have only 2 Tube Preamps (Avalon) wich I like a lot and when I need to record drums or live bands I add the preamps of my Yamaha O2r (conected to adat bridge) wich does the the job very decently!
To buy the Control 24, the O2R should go...
How's the C24 pres compared to the O2R ones?
Or is it in the Digi001 fashion (wich I dislike a lot)?
What are they comparable to?
Thx in advance for any comment.

I don't think they are as edgey as the 001 pres, and they sound better than any Yamaha pre I've heard.

They are not world class pres, but they are surprisingly decent considering how many you are getting, plus all the rest of what you get on the C24.

JMHO.

If they are better than Yamaha's pres, I think I'll be fine.
I was just afraid they were kind of Digi001 pres...
Ont thing that is not clear in the specifications: All 16 pres phantom-powered?

Hi,

All 16 of the Mic Pres have phantom power that is switchable in groups of 8. If you want to get detailed information you can download the manual here:

Thanks,

Thx, just downloaded the Pdf Manual.
Ok, this is a possible dumb question, but here we go:

So, I will not harm a non-48V microfone (SM57, Beta52...) If I insert it in a bank that the Phantom power is On???

You should not plug or unplug a dynamic mic while phantom power is on. If you're using a combination of phantom/non-phantom mics, shut off the phantom while plugging in or unplugging all the mics. Then switch on the phantom after they are all plugged in. It is safe to have phantom on with a dynamic mic...just don't plug or unplug it with phantom on.

Cheers,
Chris

It is NOT safe to have a ribbon plugged in in the same fashion however...... if you own anything that says "Royer" or "Coles" on it, don't plug it into phantom and if you have anything that says "Beyer" on it look at it carefully....

I used the yamaha at a studio I had worked at, and I also used the control 24 (before we got rid of it) at a School I work at. I agree that they are better than the yamaha's, but not much better at all. they are acceptable, but the board itself did not do much for me. It was good for fader moves ( which i think are better on a mouse) adjusting levels while tracking, but thats about it. the plug in editing was horrible. but I know you were talking more about the pres. Anyhow, they are OK, I did a full length record through the board and wasnt impressed with the sound. But you do have a good avalon so you can run all of your individual tracks through that as ODs and just use the board for drums.
hope that helps

The big prob with them is the gain. Calibrating our studio properly makes them clip 6 db below zero. There is some high sparkle, but the lows kinda suck. The noise floor is not good at all, but yeah better than the 001s. But it was tough to tell how the 001 pres sounded as the A/D was a bit harsh.

I would only recommend them for scratch tracks.
