Yes, it's a monster that doesn't fit every case. But it's doing a great job without being audible, even though I OC'd my CPU.

ok, consider me won over to the Noctuna cooler.
What really did it is when I saw them using the Noctuna NH-D14 as the reference air cooler at tomshardware to compare with several closed loop water cooling systems, and the water coolers really did not do significantly better, if as well. And, of course, the low noise is desired.

One issue with such a massive cooler is the potential stress on the motherboard if you are moving your system around. But resting steady in your studio should not be a problem.

Also I have abandoned the C606 Mboard, and decided to go with a friendly Asus P9X79, which should be a sound base.

Does anybody have any insight into if the i7 3960X would give significantly better performance than the i7 3930K?

There's approx a $500 difference between the two and from what I can tell, the only difference is a 3mb increase in the L3 Cache and a minuscule increase in processor speed.

Navigate this site to find information related to your CPU and then you can compare that to a couple of other comparable CPUs the link that I gave you is my comparison so you have to start over
