Okay, I've got the basics of this project done. I think the last phase - tweaking things to make them synch up exactly - is going to be a tall task due to the slight different in speed (and therefore pitch) of the tape vs. digital copies with which I am working.

I think the best thing for me to do is meet with someone very good at PT and get some hands-on help. Does anyone know someone in the Houston area who I should contact? I am of course willing to pay an hourly rate for help...

I have a feeling you can do what you need with 'varispeed' mode of Elastic Audio. It acts like a tape-stretch and will alter the pitch based upon how you stretch the audio. You can also stretch without altering pitch if that's what you need. You shouldn't find it too hard to find someone in your area who can help with that :)

You could also use the trimmer tool in TCE mode so that you can match the length of a clip to the other clip. There may be some relative drifting and flanging among the two clips in the middle of the time stretched or time compressed clip, but it is a quick way to get the beginnings and ends of the clips to match.

These are two great ideas. I think they're both on the right track. I know where each clip begins and ends and just have to match it to the "master" track. Thanks for the clues. I will see if I can figure out how to make one or both of these approaches work.

Thanks!
