Default Avid HD I/O (16x16 Digital I/O) & 96 I/O

I am thinking of purchasing a Avid HD I/O (16x16 Digital I/O) . I currently have a 96 I/O that I use with a Focusrite Octopre 8 digital channels thru octo Lightpipe and a AP1 +3124 4 channels of analog when recording drums at 44.1 . I wish to record at 88.2 and can not get 8 channels of digital thru light pipe with 96 I/O .
Would my 96 I/O and the Avid HD I/O (16x16 Digital I/O) work in conjunction ? Is there any other way to do this with my current set up?
Is the Avid HD I/O (16x16 Digital I/O) overkill? Omni?
Any suggestions?
Thanks in advance.
