-9171 and -9172 errors with Pro Tools HD 10.3 on HDX

i can confirm the exact same behaviour on 10.6.8, 10.7.4, 10.7.5, 10.8 and 10.8.1. all fresh installs, so this is a pro tools fault with these osx versions and the recommended actual mac pro (the 6-core should be chosen over the 12-core)

when buying a new mac pro, all you have and can install is 10.8 or 10.8.1. all lower versions won´t install. but it doesn´t matter, as in some circumstances the pro tools hd software isn´t correctly written for those machines no matter if you´re on SL, Lion or ML.

Well what worked for me is the following: during mixing I've assigned 14 (out of 16 so 1 processor) cores to PT. I've converted all of PI's that support DSP to DSP (and not native) and used UAD PI's instead of some native ones so that the CPU usage meter was around 40% (before it was on 50%-55%) and the 9172 error was almost completely gone and we were able to finish the project yesterday. I've noticed that the 9172 error was more frequent to appear on CPU-heavy songs than on songs that used less PI's and less CPU resources. The buffer was set to 1024 samples.

i did everything that could be done with the 6-core setup long before he wrote a word. this is a standard procedure that doesn´t need approval by a forum-member...

everyones invited to watch my system getting those errors. two configurations available at the moment, one ssd with osx 10.7.5 and pt 10.3.2 and a standard harddisk with 10.7.4 and pt 10.3.2. i will also install 10.8 and 10.3.2 onto a third standard harddisk soon. and i´ll get an 8-core nehalem next week to try out.

i originally started at 10.6.8 having the exact same cpu limitation, then moving to 10.7.3 still the same, after approval by avid installed 10.7.4 still the same, now 10.7.5, 10.8 and 10.8.1 were the last tries and i tested 10.7.5 the most of the three. and while these are not supported by now, it does´t mean they don´t work. and actually they performed the same as 10.6.8 and 10.7.3.

often avid approves osx versions without updating pro tools. so the osx version was already working. this will also happen with 10.7.5 as this version works at least as good as 10.7.4

10.8 users that can´t install lower versions, should disable gatekeeper.

avid takes the problem serious, a fix is already in the works. cpu spikes should be in the 20% range at a maximum. so when you´re at 40% usage it should peak to 60% max. right now it peaks at 100% out of 40%

they fixed some -9092 and other cpu-failures from 10.2 to 10.3.

i have the problems here mixing medium sized projects in front of clients and need a solution that works. i have a recommended mac pro, i use recommended osx version(s) PLUS tested all available, i use the latest pro tools version and i use just some native plugins where the HDX system should not even think about it. now when rtas comes into play it just gets a little worse, the system stops with just some plugins less.

i will test further, so let´s see how the nehalem is working.

guys, do you have the "Plug-In Streaming Buffer" setting in the playback engine dialog? (under disk cache)

i noticed this always appears with installs from OSX Disc 10.6.5, 10.7.3 and 10.8(.0)

now i got a 10.7(.0) Disc that i directly updated to 10.7.4 with the combo update. "Plug-In Streaming Buffer" is not available anymore in pro tools 10.3.2 AND the system is way more usable. up to 50% cpu usage, no spikes! at about 60% the -9172 are showing up.

then out of nothing -9155 came up at a setting of 7/12 processors, thin all automation did not help, clear all automation did not help and thinning automation changes in the preferences did not help, but then i changed the processors to 11/12 and the failure went away.

i will look into this on mountain lion too, please tell me if you got that option in the dialog.

i waited 9 months for HDX to be stable, for most it is, especially DSP-only. but i doubt native on HDX is better than Accel at the moment and this was my point. due the lack of DSP plugins, native is important.

Streaming Buffer Dialog appeared out of nowhere, now playback immediately stops without a nanosecond of playback... no sign of a working system...

OSX 10.7.4, PTHD 10.3.2, 48 Audio Tracks @ 44.1 32bit, 9 Aux Tracks, 42 Plugins AAX and AAX DSP, NO-HEAT, 12/16 Hardware Inserts

Hi Guys,
I just fired up my BETA Testing drive that has OSX 10.7.2- I installed Pro Tools 10.1 for my HDX system and guess what!! No 9172's!!!! So I know for sure that OSX 10.8 must be part of the cause. I can't tonight, but gradually going through all the updates of Pro Tools and see when the 9172's start appearing..(Staying on OSX 10.7.2) Let you know sometime next week.

Please keep us posted,I'm doing the same .I have 4 new partitions in my Mac Pro :10.8.1 .10.8.2 ,10.7.4 and a copy of 10.7.4 on a SSD drive.
Just spent the day moving files around to clear the new partitions.
So far they all play the Protools demo song that came with the 10 install.
Tomorrow I'll start to add some plugins and push the system

I did not know that HDX were working on 10.7? What is your exact config?

I am running HDX2 on Mountain Lion and the system is fairly stable - but not as stable as PT8 on SL.

I personally find it is a good idea to completely erase my mac every once in a while . All the updates installs uninstalls PT MAC and every other Program has could be causing a issue if a the correct way of doing things was accidentally not followed correctly .

Fresh it up to the day you bought your mac new .it might make a difference , it always has for me ,
No migration or time machine , completely erase , using the mac CD ROM , then completely re install. everything. It has always fixed every issue Iv had.

Is it possible that drivers or something that has been lost in your computer could cause this . I really don't know , just start fresh then there should be no problem . ERASE EVERYTHING then install PT first if all goes well add everything else .
