Default 1st time buyer - Digi 001 or HD?

Hey all-

A buddy of mine is looking to make his first foray into ProTools (on a pro level). As I've not heard HD yet, would you suggest he go with a Digi 001 for now, or go on and make the financial leap into HD?

I've read the mixed (and sometimes heated) reviews on here, so please don't take this as another opportunity to start a Digi flame war. I'm looking more from a current usability standpoint.

Thanks for your help.

you might want to consider a used MIX system also.

You said your buddy wants to do this on a "pro level," so he should get the HD.

If he's not sure if PT is what he wants, he should test drive a system first, or buy a used Mix system.

It also depends on what features you need. I need the features in the HD system. A DJ using PT to mix tunes might be able to use the 001. If your buddy is recording the next Rolling Stones project, he might need more than the 001.

Digi 001 will give him about 24 solid tracks and ONLY rtas plug-ins....
you won't get the TDMs .... sound blender, virus, etc.

if he's professional, he doesn't need to waste his time with digi 001.

He should get a used PT Mix setup.
The HD won't be the industry standard for a while for various reasons.

I heard that prices on Mix systems (new ones) is going to drop after June 30th. A Digi dealer told me last week that none of the big studios in my area are calling yet to buy HD rigs, so I guess at least most of the big boys in my town are staying Mix for now.

Oh yea, to answer another question. For pro work, don't get a 001. I think they're great units I work on one a lot. I am a professor assistant at my college where we teach the students on 001's. I come home to my Mix cubed, and it's just a whole nother level of possiblity, creativity, and power. I still find myself having to watch my DSP. I get real crazy like many in here I'm sure. That's the one main reason I want an HD3. More DSP! I'm waiting for plug-in compatibilty to get sorted out. (June 30th is coming guys...Get those HD plugs done!)

I've also been told that nomatter how much DSP you have, you'll find a way to max it out. Yea, I probably will.

I think a 001 is a great small project rig, or as a compliment for a TDM rig. For example you might travel with a 001, or use it to campture ideas at home or whatever, but then go use your TDM rig at the studio to fnish teh job. And now, I think the new M Box makes for a cool little mobile rig!

Almost a year ago now I was confronted with the same question. We went into debt a got the Mix Cubed. We are so happy!

His system will be used for vocals and mixing only. He cuts his tracks at a studio that uses Radar. Does this change anyone's response, or is Mix still the way to go?

Thanks,

I would still want the Mixing power that DSP gives you.

I agree with Hardnox, I tried an album project at another studio on digi001 and I was pulling my hair out. If you want pro capabilities just get a used mix system or an HD1 if price is the issue.
