PT Setting like "Recording Delay" in Logic?
Is there a setting in Pro Tools that is analagous to the "Recording Delay" setting in Logic (under Preferences | Audio)
This setting allows me to compensate for the fixed buffer in my interface (SSL Alpha-Link) that Pro Tools does not (cannot) compensate for. This is NOT a part of Automatic Delay Compensation, nor is it a "Hardware Insert". To demonstrate the problem, record a click-track on Channel 1. Playback and send output (DA->AD) to Channel 2 (like a bounce through your interface). Record the results, check alignment of clicks on CH 1 and CH 2. They will be off (in my case 81 samples). No matter what sampling rate or "hardware buffer" I set, the result is always 81 samples... which is expected because thats the buffer in the SSL. Pro Tools has no way of knowing about that buffer, so it cannot compensate. I'm guessing that Avid interfaces somehow report this value back, since I don't see the issue with Avid interfaces. I've been working around this for years using the manual compensation setting at the bottom of each track, but it would be really great if this were an actual feature. - Dan

Re: PT Setting like "Recording Delay" in Logic?
I've seen that with many Digidesign interfaces over the years. The 888, which was Avid's (Digi's) flagship interface in the mid '90s also had a 80-some sample roundtrip. It's less than 2 ms, and thus negligible for most purposes. You only really need to adjust stuff if you're sending audio to external processing and back.

Re: PT Setting like "Recording Delay" in Logic?
It is necessary when doing overdubs and punch ins. Otherwise, the best a musician can hope for is to be 81 samples behind the beat. 81 samples at 48kHz is quite noticeable. And then the next session guy comes in 81 samples behind that. Before you know it, you have a problem.
I guess I'll stick with manually compensating on a track-by-track basis. I much prefer PT to Logic. - Dan

Also always wondered why that setting is expressed in time instead of samples, since time will vary by sampling frequency, whereas samples will not. - Dan

Re: PT Setting like "Recording Delay" in Logic?
I've never met a musician who was accurate within 2ms, and I spent 15 years with the best in Nashville.

I never understood that. It would be so So SO simple in samples, and waaaaaay more accurate.
