Default Toronto Film Fest Specs?

We've just been given audio post on a film to be shown at Toronto International Film Festival.

Anything special I need to watch out for? Is it a volume war?
We're delivering on DVD with a 5.1 soundtrack.

Thanks for any insight.

TIFF has not chosen "films to show" yet, they are just accepting submissions. TIFF will not play out of a DVD so your film "is not a film to be shown at TIFF"...as you put it (not at this time anyway, it is just an entry). It is pretty simply though, contact TIFF and they will tell you. I am preparing several entries for TIFF as well:))

Hi Breck,

I had a couple of films at Toronto last year and was lucky enough to be there in person.

One was a feature, which i recorded and posted, with a fairly quiet and detailed mix (really needs to be played at 7) - sadly at a couple of venues it was played out at 6, which killed most of the ambiences.

On the other hand, a tv doc i recorded, which was mixed for UK broadcast, was pretty loud and clear consistently, if not too loud (it was a TV mix, so i'm sure the projectionist had to turn it down).

The new Bell Lightbox Cinemas at TIFF sound crisp and wonderful and have plenty of detail, as compared to some of the other venues - but then i visited them when they were brand new. The AMC's are of usual multiplex standard. I also had a premiere at the Elgin Theatre, which is big, grand and echoey, and not the best place for premieres in terms of sound in my opinion.

Just thought i'd share my experiences.

Best,

Yush

Yush

They would turn a TV mix up most likely, -10 or even worse -24 lkfs is awfully quiet in a theater. Ask The TFF for their specs so you dont get burned. Play your mix on an 85 calibrated stage and adjust your mix to your calibrated level. I mix features close to full scale. I prefer films mixed like Transformers although most DUC'ers do not like to push the envelope like that.

-24 LKFS quiet? for dialogue as the anchor element, I can't imagine 90 min + of dia at that level at 85 SPL.

personally yes -24lkfs is too quiet at 85.
Like I said we all have our own opinions.
the sound should be as big as the picture. (in my opinion)
In saying that, I do understand that not all movies are meant to rumble and I have no idea what kind of feature the poster is talking about.

Really? Have you ever heard -24lkfs on a "Dub Stage"?
You may mix Full Scale on Peaks on your features but where does the Dialog sit?
Or is everything near Full Scale. Time to trade in those Genelecs.

BS. Just a youngster who wants to be argumentative. Or maybe a typo?

Yes genelecs and I don't like them, I prefer adams and yes I take my mixes to a dub stage.
Yes I am kind of a youngster but I'm not trying to be argumentative.
I have many happy clients just like everybody else on here.
I believe in forward progression and I like big full loud mixes.
Like I said a lot of DUCer's would disagree with me but I'm not afraid to speak from my experiences and go against what the majority thinks.
Obviously I'm not going to have a romantic subtle intimate moment blaring in your face, but I like everything loud and proud.
I'm reminded of people saying their ears were ringing after transformers, and also slum dog millionaire was too loud but look at the awards slum dog won and I love the way transformers was mixed in the theatre, I could feel the transforming happening.
We can all agree to disagree, I'm not forcing my style upon you. I just wanted to put my two cents in :)
So in answer to the original post I always mix to spec so ask TFF what the spec is and its possible you could be in for a loudness war if there is no spec *_*
