Default newbie problem getting sans amp effect turned on

I have a Windows 7 PC with one of those $50 Guitar Track M-Audio boxes running the scaled down version of Pro Tools. I updated all the drivers for
M-Audio and Pro Tools. Everything seems to be installed fine.

I bring up Pro Tools and opened a few of the sample projects. When I had
the "rock" project open, I tried recording over one of the guitar tracks that
features the use of the Sans Amp plug-in that comes bundled with this
version of Pro Tools. I only get the clean output of the M-Audio box without
any distortion effects, when I record over that track.

How do I turn on the Sans Amp (or any other plug-in effect) for the track
that I select? Is there something I click on?
I found Pro Tools easy to record with, but am banging my
head trying to figure out how to turn on Sans Amp while I am recording.
I can access the Sans Amp window with all the Sans Amp controls, but
I can't actually get the Sans Amp sound that I adjust to come out of
the m-audio box into the headphones I am using. And of course, the
recording comes out with the guitar clean instead of with the Sans Amp
distortion/overdrive.

What settings would you use in the control panel for the M-Audio box as
far as sound input and output? I tried different combinations but was
just able to get the clean guitar sound recorded without the Sans Amp
distortion effects (i.e. that the example "rock" project had on a few
guitar tracks).

Thanks for any advice on this!

SansAmp is a plugin that you would insert on the track you want to process.
