Default How to emulate a dynamic eq?

For a while now I've been aware of dynamic eq's. I've done some reading on them and can kind of understand the thinking behind them. I've also done some reading on trying to emulate one with separate plugins (eq/compressor/multiband splitter like the Blue Cat MB7-2) but am getting confused in trying to put it all together and understand the concept and how to set the controls. Does anybody have a reference or website they can point me to that really explains this and how to do what I want?

Most things audio-wise I can figure out but this one - not so much.

This all presupposes that dynamic eq's are not snake oil

Maybe this will help?

You can download a trial of Ozone 7 and use the Dynamic EQ for yourself.

Or if you already have 2 iZotope Products, right now you can upgrade to the Music Production Bundle and get Ozone 7 Advanced, Nectar 2, Insight, Alloy 2, and Trash 2 for $210 from AudioDeluxe. I used my Ozone 5 serial number and my Nectar Elements serial number (type in to the comments section of your order) to qualify. It's an amazing deal IMHO.

Cool! I have all of Tokyo Dawn's (free!) plugs and I love them to bits. Didn't know they had a Dynamic EQ available.

@ Musicman691 - It's not 'Snake Oil', dynamic eq is a very powerful & effective tool. Been using Brainworx for a good while. Using Manny Marroquin's 'Tripple D' more and more on vocals and recently got a chance to try the new Izotope Ozone 7 dynamic EQ. Very useful tools.

Think of dynamic EQ like setting up an 'old school' de-essing chain; Copy the source (or set up a bus) and highlight the offending frequency, then key the output to the side chain of a compressor on the source track.

Hope I'm making sense here...

As I understand it, instead of compressing audio at certain frequencies (like a multi-band compressor) and thereby increasing density, dynamic EQ merely reduces gain (level) of those frequencies.

Please correct me if I'm wrong.

I know about the Ozone page you linked to and it only gives a general thing to try say for the hihat case but no explanation on how to actually do it. The page was more how to use one which as I said I more or less got figured out. I'm looking for a Heathkit-style set of instructions on how to build a dynamic eq from separate components and how to set the numbers. Is it as simple as say using Blue Cat MB7-2 to split the signal into discreet frequency bands and in a band one puts an eq and then a compressor?

Being I only have one Izotope product at the moment I don't qualify for the discount.

It's more like a multi-band de-esser.

Your crossover points would represent the frequency bandwidths, in terms of broadband EQ (boosting or cutting their output level), and then a de-esser on each frequency band would reign in any unwanted peaks for that frequency, that go over the threshold you set.

Anyway, I think you'd have a tough time, going the emulation route, trying to compete with McDSP's AE400, and Soundradix Surfer EQ even more so (which is fundamentally the same concept).

Here's a little further reading :

I know about the AE400 and the Surfer EQ but I'm trying to make do with what I have. It should be possible to cobble one together; if I outdo an existing piece in flexibility - then I'm happy. How about a multi-band compressor that I can have different compressors in each band? Been there/done that with MB7-2 and 1176 and LA2A plugins. Imagine doing the same thing in a dynamic eq where you can pick the eq type? Near as I know it's not done commercially.

Sounds like a recipe for uneven tonal characteristics, and weird phase shift problems.

Congrats, you've created a multi-band comb-filter.
