Default why only with a digidesign audio interface

Hi all,

I have pro tools 8.03 with 003 rack audio/midi interface and using it with my macbook pro 17" and running OS X 10.6.2 snow leopard. I have just realized the other day when I wanted to make some adjustments on a project I was working on in pro tools on my macbook pro 17" without having to connect my macbook pro to the 003 interface but pro tools wouldn't open unless I connect the 003 to my macbook pro.

I wanted to work in pro tools comfortably on my bed with my headphones on but pro tools won't open unless I have my macbook pro connected to the 003 interface.

Is there a way around this or do I have to always connect the 003 interface to my macbook pro?

A lot of the other DAW software let's open it's DAW without having to connect to an audio/midi interface to work on a project.

Digidesign/Avid is a Hardware company. Yes they do sell software but the main point is they develop hardware. The only exception to that is M-Powered and the only reason why they did that was because they purchased M-Audio.

I forgot to add that they explain by design that you must have a qualified digidesign audio device connected when you open PT. I don't know what other DAW's you are talking about but most others are software companies, but not all of them.

Well, the other DAW's I'm talking about are Reason and Record by propellerheads, digital performer by motu, and ableton live.

While MOTU is a Hardware Company, the rest of them are software companies.

but then I'll have to use the other DAW's if I want to work on a project comfortably in my bed which is not a big deal cause i can export the individual tracks and import them into pro tools whenever I go to my studio.

Depending on how you import you're right. I should make myself more clear on the hardware, software part of the companies. All companies may make both hardware and software but there main basis was one or the other usually. Example: "Apple" "Microsoft" They both manufacture hardware and software but are known either more as a hardware company or software company.

"comfortably in my bed" usually isn't a huge consideration when developing recording applications...but-
You could get an Mbox 2 Micro, which is about the size of a thumb drive.
If you don't need the extra PT 8 it comes with, sell it on eBay and recoup 125.00 (or so) of the 249.00 price tag.
