Default Help! G4 OS out of memory, and I have 512MB!

I am having trouble running PTLE with Waves Native Gold. I have added memory up to 512MB, but the problem seems to be the Mac OS rather than PTLE or DAE. I have read MANY threads in the DUC on memory allocation, ands I am still missing something.

When I have a session open in PTLE (with only a couple of plug-ins inserted) and try to run it, I get message "You're running out of CPU power. Increase usage limit (-9128)". I have made the following settings:

DAE preferred memory - 80MB
PTLE preferred memory - 60MB
Disk cache - 2MB
% of available memory to use - 220MB out of 250MB (about 85%).

When I look at "About this Computer", DAE and PTLE have plenty of available mamory.....but the Mac OS is pegged at 250MB. It shows 512MB as total memory and and 123MB as "largest unused block".

When I close PTLE, the OS is still using 244MB...a drop of only 6MB. So, it seems to be something else besides PTLE/Waves (right??). I have gone thru the extensions and turned most of them off, per other threads on DUC. It is a now pretty short list.

Questions:
(1) Why is the OS limited to 250MB? Why does the Memory Manager only show 250MB at 100% usage? Why isn't the 123MB "unused block" available for the OS?

(2) Why does the OS take this much memory with everything closed?

I am clearly missing something. Please give me some advice.
Thanks!
Mike

here's a couple of ideas....
in PT set your hardware to 128.
the OS should not be using 250mg of ram . check out the ram allocation for your OS.
if the ram issue persists do a clean install.
btw, which OS version are you using?
try setting your disk cache to 512k.
dae and pt allocations look ok though.
let us know how it worx out

bh,
Is there an easy way to view the RAM allocation within the OS, or do I have to search through individual items?

I am using OS 9.04.

Thanks for the help!

OK, I found it. My bad. I had switched on RAM Disk and set this to 220MB. I thought (duh) that this was how I set CPU Usage at 85% (220 is about 85% of 250). I switched this off and my OS memory down went to 51MB w/ PTLE/DAE on.

However, I still had to go into the PTLE Hardware Setup panel and set CPU Usage up to 85% to get the session to run. I was surprised at this but, anyway, it works now.

Thanks.
