I remember to have that issue a few times and in my case was related with 2 drivers . Video card and storage driver controller drivers as far as i remember . You can test updating or reinstalling them before go any further .

well i first disabled the pci graphics card and used the onboard intel chip , it was still laggy and slow to respond, so i am back on the gt630 i updated the drivers for this , still have the problem , i looked for the "storage controller driver".. in device manager , it seemed to have something to do with an old ibstallation of alcahol 120% , i never use it so i uninstalled it , i still have the slow response time on pro tools ...its only pro tools that seems to be suffering ,
everythinng else on this pc runs fine , protools used to run fine aswell !!!! i really dont know what could have changed... wouold i lose any work if i re installed it from the cd ?
thanks
mark....(desperate)

Re-installing won't hurt any session data, but consider a few things before you do that.
1-sometimes starting fresh is the best thing(glad you're not afraid of that)
2-if you choose to reinstall Pro Tools, you must uninstall it first. When you do that, you MUST also uninstall the HD driver, no matter what hardware you use(this is a checkbox option, just remember to check it). You can also check a box to delete prefs and database files, and I would check that option as well(it only takes a few minutes to reset prefs after the re-install).
3-if you are not hip to drive imaging and/or cloning, you NEED to discover this trick as it can save lots of hair pulling. I started with Acronis, but it has ticked me off to the point that I am now using a utility called Backupper(they have a paid version, but I am using the free version with success). Grab any sale-priced USB drive and keep it for nothing but drive images(and if its large enough, you can copy sessions for backup AND stash everything you download, like updates, plugin installers, etc). Saving a drive image(the C: drive) when your system is running great makes it easy to restore your system to that point in time. Given the amount of malware/virus/trojan garbage, plus how sometimes an update will mess up your rig, or a seemingly harmless utility like Paragon HFS+ for Windows(which completely hosed my system drive last month), drive imaging can save the day

4-(this might be really important), if you have saved custom IO, session templates, track templates, etc. I highly recommend you locate and copy all to a new folder(I named mine PT Settings and parked it on the desktop). The reason is because if that info is stored in the default folders, an UNinstall might also delete them(and they will certainly be deleted if you reload ALL your software). I also keep a copy of that folder on my samples drive

Check in BIOS and see if there's a floppy drive controller that you can disable. Even if you don't have a floppy, or even a PORT for a floppy, some mobo manufactureres still had floppy controllers in their bios. If it's there, disable it.
