honestly I wonder how soon this question really takes? 6 months? Time for another full rewrite of mac pro tools..... Might be a good time to move my existing install to Windows.....

Re: PT on macOS Sierra?
Maybe it takes no time at all. OSX 10.10 and .11 were a little drastic about changes. MacOS 12 feels somewhat incremental, but we're yet to get the ugly details of what, API-wise, has changed.

Re: PT on macOS Sierra?
Care to share what it is you don't like about HFS+?
Also: APFS, or Apple File System, is to be released as a Developer Preview with macOS 10.12. APFS is scheduled to ship in 2017. My guess would be as the native filsystem with macOS 10.13 and iOS 11. (Apple Developer site) HFS+ and APFS are filesystems; a fundamental part of an OS. While APFS is the "shiny new" one, HFS+ is the proven one. Let us hope Apple gets it together and that this change won't cause any trouble for the developers of Avid - for us Pro Tools users. We AV people are very dependent on these layers of the OS. Millisecond timing is of importance. I'm afraid this complete change of native filesystem could introduce bigger problems than, but very much like, the video stuttering we have since Apple upgraded the related video subsystems. This time a change could be affecting HDD/SSD read and writes. Don't get me wrong. I'm actually excited. Not sure though I'll be running the APFS first generation on any of my audio drives.

Re: PT on macOS Sierra?
HFS+ is a 30 year old technology not designed for todays storage needs.
If you read the docs it sounds like they took what they liked from ZFS and then added layers that they wanted. Of course I wouldn't recommend running it on anything yet (in fact its container only right now for testing).. but it will eventually replace HFS and all its annoying quirks.. |
