Default Nail The Mix Raw Tracks, Surprised

Well i signed up the other day because they were offering the RAW tracks from Bring Me The Horizons "Doomed" track. I have this album that this track is from and love this song and what Dan Lancaster (mix engineer) did with it. The session was a big 86 tracks with lots and lots of layers.

When listening to the raw tracks a few things caught my attention.

1 A lot of parts were recorded with reverb on even the distorted guitars. I always thought this was a no no in recording but hey ive learnt something new. Would the mix engineer add more reverb??

2 The drums didn't sound as big and punchy as they do on the mixed version, even the samples that Dan used to enhance the acoustic drums are included with the session and this was an eye opener.

3 Playing just the raw tracks the song sounded good any way which i didn't expect.

4 You can hear the tuning on the vocals when soloed, its very obvious but in the track you cant hear it. This was something that really surprised me. when i tune vocals i work hard on making sure that people cant hear they have been tuned.

On the 1st April Dan is going to do a live mix and then take questions. I'm looking forward to this because I'm interested to see how he went about routing certain instruments, how he went about enhancing the drums and did he add more reverb/effects to the already recorded guitars with reverb. Im also looking forward to what effects he added to the drums.

Not necessarily a bad thing if you know for sure that's the sound you want. Just has to do with making that final decision early in the process. Back when engineers were limited by track counts, they recorded with effects all the time. You can always add more if you want later.

Probably had a lot of processing going on the the mix.

Something that has helped my mixes immensely is to have well-recorded tracks! Like the old saying - Garbage In=Garbage Out.

I'm with you there - I hate hearing these modern recordings with the over use of tuning. I prefer vocals to sound natural. Of course, a great singer helps!

I didn’t no that adding reverb on top of reverb was something that could happen, I also watch a clip today where CLA mentions that he has his sony and bricastti reverb units connected together

This has made me rethink the way I use reverb now.

The strange thing is we are all told not to use to much reverb when we first start mixing because it sounds like a classic beginner mistake??

There are about 4 snare samples layered with the original snare which really add to the drum sound all the guitar parts have loads of reverb on them

Another thing that surprised me was how raw sounding the overheads and room mics were. I thought they would have sounded silky like the final mix but they don’t.

Do you feel it is worth the $20 a month?
I’ll admit, I’m intrigued.

I’ve only signed for this month, will probably cancel after this one depending on what band and session is up next month. If the live mix and the Q&A with Dan Lancaster prove to be informative then yes $20 is worth it. I would have paid $20 just for the BMTH session files it has given me a great insite already :)

Thanks for the response!
I might give it a try. It's always interesting to hear other engineers pre-mixed recorded sessions. Makes me feel like a good engineer but makes me realize I need to work on my mixing skills....
