Default Linear Phase Eq

Hey guys, wondering if you knew which eq's are linear phase that come stock in protools 12, if any. I'm mastering a track and it would be great to know.

None of them are.

Also, you do not need a linear phase EQ for mastering. What you need is a great room, great monitoring and experience - in that order. :)

Default Re: Linear Phase Eq

99% of the time you don't want to use linear phase eqs while mastering because it introduces ringing and softens transients. Min phase eqs do not have this issue. You also can't (shouldn't) cut with a linear eq in low frequencies unless there is no program material in that area (ringing becomes very audible in lower frequencies.) The narrower the Q, the worse the issue.

Which all leads to why you shouldn't use linear eqs during mastering 99% of the time. They can be useful during mixing and are sometimes useful when cutting high frequency stuff to intentionally soften transients. But the bread & butter eq for mastering are minimum phase.

Thanks for the advice, that’s actually very helpful, appreciate it.
