Default Re: PCIe SSD cards and Mac Pro upgrades

I realize that the topic of this conversation is not about CPU upgrades, that being said, I feel like I need to at least offer an additional input when I saw that you have a 4.1 Mac Pro. Not sure if you realize this or not, but you can upgrade the computer to a 12 core, then turn it into a 5.one Mac Pro, for around $400.

If you have any questions, or if you're interested in doing this, feel free to PM me, and I'll walk you through the process.

I tried to respond to your PM but it says you have the max amount of stores PM messages. You'd need to delet some to be able to receive responses to your PM.

I'll go ahead and Answer your p.m. in this thread. You cannot upgrade to a six core macro to a 12 core Mac Pro. You can upgrade a quad core mac pro, to a six core mac pro. You can also upgrade an eight core mac pro, to a 12 core Mac Pro.

The OP has an 8 core that could be upgraded to a 12 core which is what I was referring to.

I'm familiar with the processor upgrades, but I've never seen them for as low as $400.

Is this a service you offer? Or is this another company?

First not that I am interested in doing so because my single 6 core so far is plenty powerful ..... That said however that is not what OWC is claiming. (If Im reading the page correctly) They are advertising that they can convert a single processor ( 3.33GHz 6-Core 'Westmere' (Intel W3680, 6-Cores, QPI: 6.4GT/s) ) into a two 6 core processor 12 core machine ... BUT you can only do so buy completely removing the single processor and tray/board thing and getting a new board and getting Two x 3.33GHz 6-Core 'Westmere' (Intel X5680, 12-Cores, QPI: 6.4GT/s) And the other big BUT is it is if you have them do it it very expensive $2449 ......

CPU trays are interchangeable between the single processor and the dual processor. So yes you can convert a single processor to a dual processor, but you do have to swap out the trays.

That's an expensive process

When I did my upgrade, about six months ago, both 6 core CPUs cost me around $350 total.

Oh, now I see. You aren't upgrading the whole processor tray, you are just upgrading the processor chips themselves and replacing them with faster processors.

I've built hundreds of PC's, but I've never tried to pull the processors from a Mac. How easy was it? Any tricks to lifting them out? I bet there is a thread on this already....

I just started using an Msata combination for my work drives in my 5.1 Mac Pro.... Its a PCI expansion if you have an Extra slot... My card can support up to 4 Msata SSD Drives in addition to your 4 bays.... Did 3 Mixes today and was rock solid....
