Unhappy Protools / MOTU 1296 campatability?

Greetings,

I am working at a friends studio tomorrow and wanted to know if the Protools LE 7.4 (Mac) system he has can interface with a MOTU 1296? is it possible to use the MOTU as an interface instead of the mbox?

I dont need to do any editing if that makes a difference, I just need multi channel outs so I can proccess each track seporately using external gear.

thanks so much!

Pro Tools works exclusively with it's own hardware. It is the ultimate pirate protection. You're only option for some variety is Pro Tools M-Powered which only works with M-Audio gear.

Otherwise, you're only other option for more ins/outs with extra hardware in LE, is via ADAT through an 002 or 003.

OK, so no option of using, say, an MBox 2 as an enormous dongle and utilize the S/P DIF I/O:s? Just a thing I heard earlier today would be possible, never tried it.

SPDIF works fine. Two channels only. On an Mbox 2, you can effectively run 4 channels simultaneously.

On the 002/003 series, you have ADAT in for 24-bit/48kHz x 8 channels.

Any I/O (preamps, A/D or DA, etc) that runs through the Digidesign interface will work. It is when you try to use a different interface (alone or along side of it) that it does not work with Protools LE. Here is a breakdown of the I/O for each interface for Protools LE:

The Mbox 2 Micro has no input nor Mic Pres but 2 channels of output (2 Analog)

The Mbox 2 Mini supports up to 2 channels of input with one Mic Pre (2 Analog)/2 channels of output (2 Analog).

The Mbox 2 supports up to 4 channels of input with 2 Mic Pres (2 Analog and 2 digital SPDIF) and 4 channels of output (2 Analog and 2 digital SPDIF)

The Mbox 2 Pro supports up to 6 channels of input with 2 Mic Pres (4 Analog and 2 digital SPDIF)/4 channels of output (2 Analog and 2 digital SPDIF).

The Digi 002/002R/003/003R supports up to 18 Channels of input with 4 Mic Pres (8 Analog, 8 ADAT Optical, 2 digital SPDIF)/18 channels of output (8 Analog, 8 ADAT Optical, 2 digital SPDIF)

The Digi 003R+ supports up to 18 Channels of input with 8 Mic Pres (8 Analog, 8 ADAT Optical, 2 digital SPDIF)/18 channels of output (8 Analog, 8 ADAT Optical, 2 digital SPDIF)

I hope that helps.
