Default Dual Core or Quad Core??

Does PT take advantage of the quad cores of the newer macs or will my current MBP dual core be enough? I've read in certain places that PT doesn't even utilize the multiple cores of the Macs and that I should reduce my core count by one.

I need to upgrade from my early 09 iMac 24", which is maxed out at 4G or RAM. I'm having some problems with my plugins: Reason and especially the Spectrasonics stuff (Omni and Trill). I am also currently on Leopard and PT8. I will need to upgrade to Lion and PT10.

The MBP is currently used for home stuff, but I am thinking of trading setups, since the MBP can hold up to 8G of RAM. It's a late model 2010 unit: i5 and a dual core. Should I expect improved performance with the MBP (dual core) or do I need to switch to a quad core?

My options are:

1. switch to my MBP (dual core), buy additional RAM and a monitor (non-Mac). Also, thinking this MBP won't last much longer than a year.

2. get a new iMac (quad core) and add some RAM (8G to start)

if there is a significant upgrade from dual core to quad core, I'd just assume dump the money into a new Mac now and not waste $$ on RAM and a monitor for my MBP.

Thanks.

PT uses cores just not efficiently

I'd go new i7 and as much RAM as you can get

I'd go with the quad just to be ready for whats to come software wise.

However with that said I'd also wait until the newer models come out in a couple of months and just use the laptop until then

i have a late 2011 macbook pro quad core i7. They will take 16GB of ram.
The 16GB was $96. very cheap. Go with the imac quad core i7.

Pro tools is multi-core and hyper threading aware. So a quad-core that hyper threads will show as 8 cores.

The reason for setting your playback engine to one less than available, is to free that one core to run the operating system, other back ground tasks, and some plug-ins that are running non-realtime code. It's not thats it's not being utilized, it's just being utilized for tasks that can cause issues when running non-realtime code with the realtime playback engine.

Chris
The latest mention up to 8 gig of RAM. I wonder why they lowered it.

they have always stated 8GB. But OWC ran tests and found that the late 2011 macbook pro will support and run 16GB no problem. Here are a number of online webpages with info in it.

plus i am proof. My late 2011 macbook pro runs 16GB ram. I have run all the tests as well and all the ram passed every test.

Probably so when the new ones say 16GB it will seem like an upgrade.
