Default PT 9 is beyond me :(

Here is what happened to me and what is leaving me clueless and totally desperate:

I decided to learn myself into mixing by the end of last year. I was also curious about when I will hit the wall regarding the capability of my HP Pavilion DV8 1050eg to process audio/do mixing.

At that time my laptop was everything but a dedicated machine for mixing/audio processing. I still had the preinstalled OS (Win7 64bit) on it, along with some useless (at least for me) programs and features provided by HP. I also had MS Office, SPSS, Skype, Nero and some other stuffed installed on it. Other than a standard tweak regarding visual effects and preventing some services from loading at startup, no optimization tweaks have been applied to that laptop. Nearly none of the optimization tweaks recommended by AVID have been applied.

About two month ago I was about in the middle of a mixing training session. By that time I had 53 plugins loaded. Honestly speaking, this was already more than I expected being able to load, even with my UAD2 SOLO/Laptop card. And there was still headroom for loading more plugins: 30% CPU load on my laptop, 40% DSP load on the UAD2. That looked fine!

I then ran into what later turned out to be the SansAmp bug. Error messages again and again. I decided to do a complete reinstallation, and get rid of the programs and features I do not need and did all the tweaks recommended by AVID. I spent five weeks reinstalling over and over again, because the session still crashed. Yeah, the SansAmp plugin was still loaded. After posting that issue here, some guys gave me a hint on that. Problem solved? Nope. Now my Waves plugins are exhibiting a freaky behaviour: Kramer Master Tape causes a CPU overload and digital distortion when loading. Some of the control knobs graphics do not load immediately. When you click on where they are supposed to be, they appear. But once the GUI is loaded completely KMT suppresses all the audio output. A similar thing happens with the VEQ4. When activated some of the knobs are missing. Playing back the audio the track gets badly distorted ...

I have absolutely no clue on why I cannot load even a single Waves plugin after reinstalling my system and doing all the tweaks recommended. It is beyond me why I have been able to run tons of those Waves plugins on my suboptimally configured system, and why I cannot after reinstalling and tweaking my system.

Waves tech support is taking care of that, but as yet they have no idea. The VST-plugins work well; I installed a demo version of FL Studio, no issues with those plugins. Looks like I will have to switch to Cubase 6 ...

Any hints, suggestions, or experiences are welcome!

FWIW, here is my Sandra (OS, PT, and plugins on C:, Session files/audio on G:):

The SansAmp bug might be fixed by inserting a dither plugin before the SansAmp plugin Any computer will do its best by using it for audio and nothing else. I keep a $99 off-lease hp desktop for internet and all non-recording work

Ralf; I had similar problems with Waves on my machine, this fix worked for me:

Go to Start Menu > Settings > Control Panel.

Select Regional and Language Options.

Click on the Customize icon.

Make the following changes:
- Decimal symbol: . (dot)
- Digit grouping symbol: , (comma)
- List separator: , (comma)
- Negative number format: -1.1

Thank you for the hint. Waves Tech Support already suggested this fix. Tried it with no success.

Switched to Cubase 6, no glitches with my plugins anymore
