I was wondering if it's possible to record a midi track (say for drums) and then record the track again to add cymbals, other drums, etc without recording over the original track?

I'm trying to figure out the best way to record/program my drum programs/tracks within Protools and then rewire to Reason. I know I can do this in Reason but I want to use PT as much as possible.

Another question I have is regarding quantitizing the notes. I've tried to use this featuer but don't get very good results. Not like I do with Reason, anyway. I am pretty sure I'm not using the feature correctly.

Any advice would be appreciated.

Yes. You have to put Pro Tools in MIDI merge mode. It's the button on the transport that looks like a sideways "Y".

Quantize is dependent upon your performance. You still need to get your notes near the beat you want. If your performance is too far off, quantize will place the notes in the wrong beat.

You also need to pay attention to the quantize note value. It limits the degree of note movement. If it's set to quarter notes, Quantize will move everything to beats 1,2,3, and 4. Choose an appropriate quantization level.

Also beware of triplets. They won't quantize properly unless you set that in the MIDI quantize dialog box.
