Error 997 Keeping Pro Tools From Installing (Windows 7)
So, Pro Tools is, once again, giving me problems when trying to install an upgrade/update.
I decided a couple days ago that it's time for me to go from 11.1.2 to 11.2.1. However, when trying to install it, I was met with "Error 997.Overlapped I/O operation is in progress." This occurred (and still does) after Avid Effects were completed during the instillation process. Remembering that I needed to completely remove everything Avid from my computer last time to get Pro Tools to install correctly, I did just that (except the plugins located in Program Files (x86)→Common Files→Avid→Audio→Plug-Ins and Program Files→Common Files→Avid→Audio→Plug-Ins), and still, all versions of Pro Tools 10 or 11 were stopped by the Error 997. I went digging around the Internet searching for answers at this point, and found that Microsoft's KB2918614 patch created issues with the Windows installer and has caused this error before. Logically, I removed it, but to my dismay, nothing changed. Based on other suggestions, I've also tried to install Pro Tools on a different admin account, in safe mode (which, as suspected, didn't work), and even went into the System Configuration and started up the computer with minimal services selected (disabled any firewall/antivirus services, audio, third-party programs, etc). All failed, and the error continues to pop up exactly as predicted. So, do any of you have any idea on how to fix this ? I'm currently stumped and really don't want to have to play cat and mouse with this error. Basic Computer Info: Windows 7 Professional 64-bit Service Pack 1 Processor: Intel(R) Core(TM) i3-2120 CPU @ 3.30GHz RAM: 8GB |

Re: Error 997 Keeping Pro Tools From Installing (Windows 7)
I have always made it mandatory to run a registry cleaner after un-installing Pro Tools (then rebooting) and have never had a problem re-installing (on practically all versions).
I'm not sure if this will fix your problem but I thought it worth a mention.

Re: Error 997 Keeping Pro Tools From Installing (Windows 7)
Can you restore your computer to a Restore Point before you installed KB2918614?
Just removing the patch may not fix the issue with the windows install service. |

Re: Error 997 Keeping Pro Tools From Installing (Windows 7)
Here's another possible hitch(and restoring from a drive image would be a huge help on this), when you UNinstall PT now(ever since version 9) you are presented with options to also UNinstall HD Driver(doesn't matter if you are running HD or not). You MUST select to uninstall this driver. If you don't, Windows will see the driver and assume that PT is still installed(can't for the life of me figure out why its an option)

Re: Error 997 Keeping Pro Tools From Installing (Windows 7)
Unfortunately, I still can't restore to a point before the error occurred. The earliest I can go is sometime October 22nd, and this whole thing started on October 21st. Also, zedhed, what do you use to perform the registry cleaner?
On a slightly different note, after yet another failure, I took a look at the Windows Installer log to see if there's any helpful info. Of course, there's a lot of information, but I did find this at the end of the .txt file: === Logging stopped: 10/24/2014 1:53:28 === MSI (c) (34:9C) [01:53:28:666]: Note: 1: 1708 MSI (c) (34:9C) [01:53:28:666]: Product: Avid Pro Tools -- Installation operation failed. MSI (c) (34:9C) [01:53:28:672]: Cleaning up uninstalled install packages, if any exist I tried searching for something involving that 1603 error, but I'm not seeing anything useful. I'll keep looking, but maybe one of you can extract something useful from it. I can post the full log if need be. |

Re: Error 997 Keeping Pro Tools From Installing (Windows 7)
MSI (c) (34:9C) [01:53:28:666]: Note: 1: 1708
MSI (c) (34:9C) [01:53:28:666]: Product: Avid Pro Tools -- Installation operation failed Error 1708 is just what the log says; Installation operation failed. MSI (c) (34:9C) [01:53:28:667]: Windows Installer installed the product. Product Name: Avid Pro Tools. Product Version: 11.2.1. Product Language: 1033. Manufacturer: Avid Technology, Inc.. Installation success or error status: 1603. Error 1603 = The file [] is being held in use by the following process: Name: [], Id: [], Window Title: '[]'. So it seems that some file the installer is trying to update is still in use. Did you get a popup stating which file it was? Also, I'm not clear on your upgrade steps, but did you do a full uninstall of the PT prior to installing the update? Normally I would uninstall PT, reboot, then install the update. |

Re: Error 997 Keeping Pro Tools From Installing (Windows 7)
Before updating Pro Tools, I'd first uninstall Pro Tools, the Avid HD Driver, etc. I'd then back up anything like plugins and session templates before going in and manually deleting everything Avid/Pro Tools. After restarting the computer, I'd install Pro Tools and everything would be dandy. That's what used to work.
Also, I didn't get a popup saying what file was causing the problem. However, after trying and failing again, some new information appeared in the log. It looks like there's some issue with the bui.dll file. Any thoughts on what's going on? Action start 22:20:22: ResolveSource. MSI (s) (A0:0C) [22:20:22:406]: Resolving source.
