DAT digital transfer overload?
I have been trying to transfer from my
Tascam DA30 to PT Mix Plus 5.1.1, ADAT bridge 24bit, but I keep getting overloads. The Dat never goe's higher than 0db, but when recording into P.T. either S/Pdif or AES, It overloads in P.T. It seems to get a hotter signal coming from the DAT to P.T. for some reason. Anyone know who to correct this?

Re: DAT digital transfer overload?
Most DAT recorders only show clipping on analog input, not on playback. If you are going into your ADAT bridge spdif or AES and you have your clock source set to digital, you can be sure that you are getting a bit perfect recording. Any cliiping PT reports is most likelt what's actually on the DAT tape.

Your right that I do not see any clipping on the playback on the dat machine, but I never remeber any clipping when I was recording to the dat either. This was a jazz project and we surely did not push the levels to the dat. Any other suggestion?

Re: DAT digital transfer overload?
This is all to do with the way the software in both the DAT and the DAW displays the same infomation.
On a DA-300 while recording it can display an 'Over' but on playback it will only display a '0'. PT will show a red light at '0' on playback and I think the 888 will dislay red lights as set by the control panel. So take this situation. PT has a signal at -1dB and that is transfered to the DA-30 and it shows a margin of -1dB .. good. Now take that up to -0.9db on PT and the DA-30 will display 0dB. The DA-30 will display '0' untill it goes higher than '0' at which point it shows an "over". I don't think this answers your question directly but take the time to transfer some signals to and from PT to the DA-30 in both analog and digital using the signal generator and things will make better sense. |
