Re: DAE can't get audio from the drive(s) fast enough
The full disk theory was stated before you mentioned you had 200GB free. That's it, it was just an initial idea.
Most thumb drives are too slow and inconsistent to record to. Avoid that. The Verbatim SSD should do it. You're starting a brand new session on that drive and recording to it? Or using audio that is still on your internal drive?

Still doesn't work. Pro tools and Mac suck.

Re: DAE can't get audio from the drive(s) fast enough
First of, you have to understand that you're using a
12 years old computer. The software has evolved to a point that even your cpu would not cut it if you were to use the latest version of pro tools. At that age, a computer will start to fail. second it's a 5400 rpm spinning disk... While it might have been okay in the early 2000, it was never the optimum for any audio recording. Couple that with how a spinning disks works and how the information is not being store sequentially (that's not pro tools fault it's how all OS'S works) then there's a lot of searching, reading, that needs to be done on a constant basis, when you add multiple tracks, well all that searching has to be done exponentially. A 5400 rpm HDD has a maximum theoretical read speed of 75 MBs. 1 minute of 16 bit 44.1 khz mono track is already 5 MBs. Multiply that by all mono track, and then add in the stereo tracks (pianos) at 10 MBs each and multiply that by the length of the song. Even if muted the information is still being gathered from the HDD real time (since pro tools 9 didn't have disk cache at the time), you will see that this tallies up quite fast and your hard drive might just be too slow now (it's pretty old) and on top of that the information as I said is fragmented. When is the last time you defragmented your HDD? This will try to put all the correlative information closer sequentially together which would make it easier for the OS to fetch the information real time. If you're interested to know the different storage space different format (bit and khz) of audio take here's a list. – 16 bit / 44.1 kHz – 1 minute of 1 mono track – 5 MB (Megabytes) 1 minute of 1 stereo track – 10 MB – 16-bit / 48 kHz – 1 minute of 1 mono track – 5.5 MB 1 minute of 1 stereo track – 11 MB – 24-bit / 44.1 kHz – 1 minute of 1 mono track – 7.5 MB 1 minute of 1 stereo track – 15 MB – 24-bit / 48 kHz – 1 minute of 1 mono track – 8.2 MB 1 minute of 1 stereo track – 16.4 MB – 16-bit / 88.2 kHz 1 minute of 1 mono track – 10 MB 1 minute of 1 stereo track – 20 MB – 16-bit / 96 kHz – 1 minute of 1 mono track – 11 MB 1 minute of 1 stereo track – 22 MB – 24-bit / 88.2 kHz – 1 minute of 1 mono track – 15 MB 1 minute of 1 stereo track – 30 MB – 24-bit / 96 kHz – 1 minute of 1 mono track – 16.4 MB 1 minute of 1 stereo track – 32.8 MB – 16-bit / 176.4 kHz 1 minute of 1 mono track – 20 MB 1 minute of 1 stereo track – 40 MB – 16-bit / 192 kHz – 1 minute of 1 mono track – 22 MB 1 minute of 1 stereo track – 44 MB – 24-bit / 176.4 kHz – 1 minute of 1 mono track – 30MB 1 minute of 1 stereo track – 60 MB – 24-bit / 192 kHz – 1 minute of 1 mono track – 32.8 MB 1 minute of 1 stereo track – 65.6 MB |

Re: DAE can't get audio from the drive(s) fast enough
Then go buy a 10 year old PC and use Cakewalk or just use GarageBand.
You fail to acknowledge any of the info provided to you for help. Refused to go out a buy a proper hard drive or see I fly run any tests on your internal drive (nobody runs sessions off thumb drives), and just come back here to bash Mac and Pro Tools? Nobody needs that. |

Re: DAE can't get audio from the drive(s) fast enough
Some things you can try for free.
1 - Download and follow the instructions for using the free Mac OS X system utility:OnyX Quote:
2 - Try making a new GarageBand session with your existing audio files. If you are not able to do that, then create a new session and record some new audio files, adding more tracks one at a time until you do or do not get an error message. |

Re: DAE can't get audio from the drive(s) fast enough
What I would do is this.
Go to macsales.com and buy SATA SSD (up to 4TB) with the SSD upgrade kit, and memory upgrade (up to 16GB). Then take the Mini and stuff to your local Mac shop and pay that shop to install stuff and do 1:1 data clone to your new internal SSD drive, unless you are comfortable to DIY obviously. This way nothing else changes except the internals.
