Default Re: Time for a new machine?

Did you build the Hack yourself? I’ve been a Mac guy since mid 90s. I thought about going this route... But I have 0 experience putting a machine together. How did you decide what parts etc?

I had three Mac 5.1 rigs, two running Mojave and my main one still on Mavericks running PT10HD.

Anyway, my main Mac died, & after much debating I built a mid-range Hackintosh tower running PT Ultimate under Catalina with an HDnative PCie card in it.

I figured it was the worst time to be buying new intel hardware (with the Apple Silicon transition on the horizon), so this setup should see me through until 2023 or so at the very least. Its been a very solid performer so far & cost under £1000

Google it. There's tons of hackintosh info out there.

Yes I did. I didn't go for the newest (Z270 SLI Plus & i7-7700k) but just googled what worked for others & was relatively affordable, so if it didn't work out for OSX & Pro Tools, it would make a decent machine for video editing on Windows.

It was actually easier & quicker to get Catalina running on the Hackintosh, than it was to upgrade one of my 5.1 machines to Mojave, where I had to do all the graphics card swapping in & out to get the firmware updated.

The only hiccup was the RX580 graphics card used.

I had to remove it & use the inbuilt graphics on the motherboard (which are fine for Pro Tools & drive a big display).

There might be another graphics card that doesn't have these issues, but as everything is working fine I've left it.

I did a post on it here.
