Another nice De-Essing alternative is to use a multiband compressor. Fabfilter MB sounds best to my ears. Alternatively McDsp A400 can also work ok.

Fabfilter was great when I was demoing it. Since then, I've moved back to Massey's De-Esser, and found the key to using it: The mix knob. I get just-as-good results now as with the Fabfilter.

Of course, manually picking out the esses in the edit window and applying your own trim gain reduction has its place too.

I've never been completely happy with any de-Esser. Like a few here, I manually adjust the clip gain and find it works well for me.

Automating the trim is one way, how about this variation
Duplicate the track, cut & drag every s to the duplicated track, dip the volume or roll off a freq to suit..
Easy to adjust any s then :)

It's an odd trick I hardly ever do but sometimes when the de-essor just won't cut it, it can help take a different approach, especially if the sibilance varies a lot.

Untill recently I've been using Waves RDeesser which is great and I can't see much reasons why to have that much headache drawing manually automation for every esss.
Anyway I must admit that there cases when de-esser isn't best solution cz it ruins vocal's top end frequencies - like for extremely compressed vocals or some vocalists whith too expresive sibilants (well THIS is the case when esses volume automation needed first!!!)
So in 99 of 100 I grab de-esser to fight with esss noise.

P.S.: lots of pro vocalists have amazing technique and control esses very good either so no de-essing needed.

I use fade-ins if they are at the beginning of the word

When we conversation about sibilance in relative to a vocal footage, we're mentioning chiefly to the 's' sounds; loud high incidence consonants shaped by the commotion as air whistles finished a singer's teeth.

Well put! That is so true..! Not too shabby as first posts go.

And, may I add, what a great way to bump a year old thread..!
