Default New hard disk in G4 - HELP!

I'm having trouble with a new Fujitsu 10GB ATA 66 drive for my G4. I installed it as the second (slave) ATA drive. I followed the Apple installation instructions - the system booted up & recognised it. I used Drive Setup to initialise it - it initialised (in a few seconds). I moved some audio files to it - they played back fine. Then I shut down.

The sytem now throws up errors when I try to re-boot. "illegal instruction" followed by "unimplemented trap" forcing me to boot with extensions off.

I have unplugged the new drive for now, but I'm stuck!

HELP!!!

Do you have Norton Disk Doctor, or any other type of disc scanning software? If so, turn those extensions off, or remove it from your system.

Hi Gulliver,

Thanks for the advice. I don't have Norton, but I will have a look through the extensions to see if anything looks like a culprit.

Happy New Year!

Maybe you didn't set up those jumper pins on drive in the correct way or maybe the ribbon cable is plugged in the wrong drive. The start up drive has to be on the end of the cable and the slave drive has to be in the middle with the cpu at the other end.

…or maybe Apple don’t mean it when they say “If there is a factory-installed ATA drive, it is configured as the primary drive”. For PRIMARY read ONLY!

Checked out jumper configs on Western Digital’s site, set the main HD as primary, double-checked Fujitsu jumpers (they were OK) fired up and got Error Type 10, then Unimplemented Trap.

Checked through Extensions – nothing looks suspicious, but I’m not an Apple expert.

Still puzzled…
