Default Volume for Mastering.

I hope some of you folks can give me some suggestions - thanks.

While mastering, I am trying to match the volume of a reference track from a CD, but after I bounce down to CD and compare with the reference, my track is much louder.

Here is what I am doing:

* After I import the track (AIFF) , I compare the volume of my track and I notice they both hit the same level on the faders.

* My track sounds louder and I solve this by using a Sonnox Limiter plugin to reduce the volume.

* After I bounce my track and burn to CD (itunes) and listen to it on my stereo system my track is much louder.

Is there something I am not doing right while importing the reference track from the CD?
Should I think about changing the import encoder on itunes from AAC to WAV or something else?
Is there any reason why I should not use itunes & use another program? In terms of audio quality itunes actually seems ok. It's just this volume issue that I need to overcome....

Thanks to all you PT users.

Why not Bounce your mix without anything on the master fader and then import the mix into a mastering session toghether with your reference track. There you can fine tune, EQ and set the volume, and try to make your mix have the same feel as your reference. Very much used technique. And the result should be that they come out the same on CD.

This is a great idea. And for burning CD's on a Mac, Toast is maybe the best 100 bucks you can spend(I hate iTunes for CD burning).

Make sure you use an RMS meter along with your peak meter.

Just reading this and found interesting, as have had similar challenges before. So what exactly does the RMS meter do and how does it work to solve the problem?
thanks

RMS (root mean square) shows an average level instead of instantaneous peak values. You could have a single peak around -0.1 dBFS but your average level could be relatively low.
