To the op...

The advice against moving your faders is absolutely correct...but...

it applies to when you are tracking, not to when you are mixing...

When recording, you should adjust the level on your interface or other gear so you are providing an average level of -15 to -18 on your meters in Pro Tools. You should not adjust your recording level by using the faders in Pro Tools. Make sure your meters are set to "pre fader" when recording.

This is all part of the technique known as "gain staging"...if you want to get high quality recordings you really need to spend some time learning about gain staging.

But when mixing, you do use the faders in Pro Tools...that's what they're there for...
As I understand it, this is applicable in any DAW.

It is applicable to all of the DAWs I've worked with...but I haven't worked with every DAW in the world.

I do not work for Avid (their loss)...my only relationship with Avid is that of a customer (when I'm not too poor to buy stuff, like now)...and that hot administrative assistant...that's more of a "thing" than a "relationship" (that should keep them guessing for a while...)

Just rockin'...what more is there?
