PT 10 "new" software input monitoring option?
I would like to ask someone to clarify exactly how the "new" albiet limited monitoring option works with PT10. If I'm reading correctly you are limited to just one stereo output pair if you want to use the new monitoring option, so I can understand that is totally not workable for folks running all the tracks discretely out to a console.
That said, within the limits of a single output pair off the DAW does the input monitor OFF option work like any other daw? Also does the "new" function work with a 3rd party interface, such as an RME FF800 or UC? Point is how exactly does this new function work, and does it truly give us the option to have the live monitoring through the program automatically mute when you do a overdub/punch in, so you can then rely on DSP monitoring? |

Re: PT 10 "new" software input monitoring option?
In the PT10 manual the new feature is described as such:
"When Low Latency Monitoring is enabled, Pro Tools disables software monitoring for record- enabled tracks routed to Outputs 1–2 only." This still doesn't sound workable for punch in work with a 3rd party DSP monitoring capable interface. What folks would need is for the software monitoring to be muted when you actually press "record", but it sounds like the new option mutes the audio even when the track is record "enabled" even before you actually hit record and are tracking. What is needed is the abilty to hear the existing track while you are overdubbing in the pre roll up until you hit "record", then the track audio should be fully muted but then you rely on your DSP monitoring to hear the live take. Please fill me in if I'm not understanding this new feature and/or the way PT works with punch ins! |

Re: PT 10 "new" software input monitoring option?
I had my concerns about this initially as well, but it works great with my RME FFUC and more importantly, with totalmix. Low latency monitoring must be enabled, this disables any plugins on the track to be recorded on. The track output must be set to main physical outs 1&2. This turns off software monitoring when the track is record armed, (speaking of monitoring the input source only.) You can obviously hear playback. As for routing, I can the route any input and any software output to any hardware output in totalmix.
Works like a charm.

Re: PT 10 "new" software input monitoring option?
yea I agree with it not being enough, you can tell avid is opening all the features to us slowly. The problem is these HD customers drop a lot of money and how would you feel if all the software features were unlocked for just $600. It is definitely coming where HD customers will have to face a fully native Pro Tools world. Personally I think avid may have to speed it up because I am very impressed with Reaper.

Re: PT 10 "new" software input monitoring option?
Yes, that is what it does. Thought that's what my post said. Lemme try again. Record arm shuts off software monitoring of the input source making it possible for the Direct Monitoring of your 3rd party interface. It does not shut down software monitoring of pre recorded material, including the record armed track, thus making it possible to punch in.
This works great. I can have my buffer set high on a mixed track with lots of plugs, and do overbubs with direct monitoring. Again, it works great.

Re: PT 10 "new" software input monitoring option?
How come we can't use this on the ProFire 2626?! I see no such option in my menu

Re: PT 10 "new" software input monitoring option?
If you have pt 10, you can. Enable LLM and go for it. Just use whatever the direct monitoring software that comes with the 2626 - what's that? Cue mix or something? Maybe that's motu, can't remember... Still you should be able to.

You can't use it with the 2626 because Avid doesn't want you to. Buy a non Avid or M-Audio interface next time. I will.

So with an exceptional I/o like the metric halo uln8 and single or stereo tracking requirements. A fast Mac + pt10 should cover all basic needs for 20-30 track compositions without the need for hd or hd native. Right?
