Default Protools LE and the fight of its life?

I just watched Propellerheads new program called RECORD!
All I can say is if it has PDC, and functions well...........

I'll be the first to admit I love Protools.... but the some of the simple things that they are lacking is killing them

OK, unless they change this.....NO THIRD PARTY PLUGINS..... it's gonna fail before they even launch it! (Everbody supports VST in someway)

For those who write music in a DAW, it's a serious contender. For those that use Reason for almost everything, for a $149 upgrade its a no brainer.

Did you see the part where they said all audio files, project and MIDI are stored in one file?

Oh yeah, no VSTs though.

Why would no VSTs be a good thing?

stability!
fewer bugs!
simplicity!

The DAW is designed to be very simple to use for getting tracks recorded FAST.

There's probably no hardware inserts either.

The only 3rd party plugins at this point are from Line 6. If you have a Line 6 product you get the Pod and Bass Pod in Record.

If you have Reason 4 you can use all the reason plugs in Record.

Ew. That means every time you save, it has to re-write the entire file into RAM and back to disc. Ug. PEAK does that, too, and it's horrible for large files. For people like me who save every time they make any significant change, that would be a deal killer.

Back in the early 90's I wrote a pocket object database for apps that saved everything in one file and did it way FASTER than your typical full-commit approach. There is no reason why this wouldn't be a better approach with intelligent engineering...the problem of course being the extreme scarcity of intelligent engineering...

This would also end the nightmare of LOST audio files! How can DIGI allow this to happen? They should be locked to your session like Gorilla Glue.

I've always found Reason to ... (hate to say it) ...pretty much suck, I mean from an audio quality standpoint. There's an obvious noisefloor issue in every version of reason, it's plugins don't dither properly creating odd-harmonics and aliasing type issues, the summing on busses doesn't sound like the channel did before bussing, and basically, I've only found the ability to flip gear around in Reason it's only redeeming feature.. if you're on a shoestring and want a pretty complex and easy to use DAW, I'd say Logic or Ableton, but PT has excellence in noise to signal ratio, excellent summing, dithering capabilities, and is well worth the chump change of an LE system if you cannot afford or get on an HD Rig. I hear MOTU's Digital Performer is great for audio post, but I'm pretty sold on the simplicity and integrity of digi..

dp is great for working with picture, particularly scoring. i really like the editing, too.
it was also (for a time) the best integrated 3rd party front end for pt hardware. if you're comfortable with pt, it's not really very much different. in fact, many of the new pt8 midi editor features were basically lifted from dp. allowing mixer/arrangement tracks to be hideable/viewable on the fly was most likely inspired there also...
many other conventions are pretty much the same between the two. i'm sure that motu and digi have been stealing features back and forth for years. at least they seem to be stealing the best ones!
