Looking for advice in scoping new ProTools Rig
Hi, I have decommissioned my old ProTools Rig (see my signature block). Mostly everything has been sold as individual components and I plan on starting from scratch.
- Awaiting the new M1 iMac's to get released, probably sometime in 1'st half of 2021. When they do, I plan on getting the 34", 512 SSD and 32GiB of RAM. - I just purchased a UA Apollo Twin X Duo and also plan on getting a UA OX. Sadly the Apollo is is sitting in the box awaiting a new iMac. - For ProTools, I plan on getting the Perpetual using the re-initialization licensing from my 10.x version. - For external drive I plan on Samsung 980 PRO 1TB Internal NVMe SSD and a Fledgling Shell T3 Enclosure. Does all this sound like a good plan? Or am I going way over the top for just basic home tracking and hobby?

Re: Looking for advice in scoping new ProTools Rig
Nobody here who can talk about stuff likely has any clue when things will happen, including when Pro Tools will run at all on Apple Arm boxes, or *run well* on those boxes, or if the M1 will actually be the processor used in larger Macs. And it's not just Pro Tools, it's the plugins and audio drivers you need supported as well. Even if an M1 can support more than 16GB I would hope Apple actually might transition to a more powerful processor with a different thermal design point for more serious Macs, but who knows. And if folks do know they can't say... so you are just open-ended waiting, ask back again once things are working and more info is public, and folks here have some hands on experience. We'll know a heck of a lot more when some audio reviewers and others get some Arm based Macs to play with.

Re: Looking for advice in scoping new ProTools Rig
Hi Darryl,
So what you're saying is, right now waiting for an ARM proc iMAC is not a good idea, seeing that none of the software, drivers or hardware is not even compatible yet? Regarding RAM, are you saying that of the three ARM devices released this week will not support more than 16GiB of RAM? I would buy a new iMac today, but knowing something that will be bigger, better and faster is right around the corner, and having good faith that applications and hardware device support will surely follow left me with some optimism. Do you see any issues using the Samsung 980 NVMe SSD as the audio drive? Thanks for your input!
