Default athlon system slow redraw?

I've been running a p3 800 system (asus intel 815 board) with 512 mb of sdramm for about a year. I finally broke down and upgraded to athlon. I got an xp1800 and a gigabyte 7dx+ board and so far just 256 megs of ddr ram.

The plugin performance is outstanding! I took a mix that was just at it's limits on the p3, and started adding l2's...(probably takes up the most processing) without stopping the audio it added 15 of them before I gave up.

The problem is that I'm noticing simple things like zooming in or toggle between mix and edit windows give me errors. this is with like 5 tracks, no plugins and buffer all the way set. All the dma stuff is correct, So far I'm getting somewhere around 24+ 8 aux on the davec test. Whats up? is it the 256 megs of memory? Also I have a gforce 256 vga card. Any ideas, please help!

if anyone can advice me on the s/w updates i should and shouldn't install i'd appreciate it.

umm it's the holding off interupts for too long, increase the buffer size etc.

it also takes WAY longer to process intensive crossfading, ie: after chopping drums. any ideas?

Strange, I get kind of the same thing. I'm running an Athlon XP2000 with 768 megs DDR ram. Radeon 32 meg in AGP slot.
I'm at 24+10 on the Davec.
I've noticed that when I zoom in close on a track and start to cut & move things around while zoomed in, my CPU meter will max out and redline, but It won't freeze... Even if I am running a few tracks with no plugs it will do this. I had this very same video card in a different board before I upgraded to a new board and an XP2000, with no problems, so I know it's not the vid card.
Our problem seems very related. If you find an answer let me know, and I will do the same. Thanks, Carl

i have the same board, same problem. its not a video card issue. i had the same problem through 3 video cards. the latest is a radeon 8500 (sweet!). i think it has more to do with the via chipset than anything else. my stupid workaround is to always stop playback before zooming in really tight.

well I wasn't sure what to install. when i had my pentium system, the idea was NOT to install the mb drivers. (I asked in my original question what I should and should install)

I called digi, they used the common tech support tactic...find something in their system that they don't support and blame it on that. he picked my promise controller. put the system drive back on the mb ide ports and still the same thing.

btw. I'm getting 24+5 on the davec test.
