Midi Only Works with PT Open

I have had a Midi Express XT for a long time, and it has worked perfectly. I have the latest drivers installed.

What I don't understand is that I used to be able to trigger my midi modules without even starting up my computer. Just select the right channel on my controller and play. Now (and I am not sure how or when) I have to boot my computer and launch Pro Tools to get midi to pass from my controller to the modules. When PT is open, I can select any midi track and play the corresponding instrument without issue. I can record midi data and play back fine, no issues at all

I am sure that I did not have to have PT open before, and something must have changed, but I do not know what.

Keep pushing the select button. I think it's somewhere in the middle. Mark the unit with masking tape or something where it works so you never forget how to do that.

Thanks for the response, tried this many times. I am using the same user preset I have always used, and it shows configured correctly in Clockworks.

The MIDI Express is a MOTU unit right? If it's anything like my MOTU MIDI Timepiece AVUSB there's a small coin-style battery in it and those do fail. When they do one of the indicators is settings/routings no longer work consistently like they used to. Replace that battery and you should be okay. The type of battery used is commonly available; Radio Shack (if you still have one around you) or even a local drug store. The battery type is a CR2032.

The reason things worked okay in PT is you were probably triggering your synths via a MIDI track in PT and not directly through the interface.

I had already replaced the battery a couple of weeks ago, as the interface was losing its configuration on boot.

Been working perfectly now for 24 hours-

Help me to understand - you already replaced the battery and you're still having these issues? If so that's really strange as what you describe is the classic 'failed battery' syndrome. I'd almost say that if indeed you are still having problems to post about this over on Motunation but from personal experience I'd stay away from there. PM or email me for my reasons for stating that (they're not fit for general consumption).
