Default System & Session on same SSD

Hello,

Mid 2014 MacBook Pro with SSD and 16Gb Ram - Could I use the internal SSD for both System and Session Files, and Audio Libraries? Only about 16 tracks.
Anyone tried this? Thanks.

Cheers, Brian.

I mean, you can. But I wouldn't really recommend it. Not only is it putting a lot of work on your primary SSD, but it's also not supported by Avid. I did it once for about a week when I built my newest system. I was waiting on the second drive to arrive. I noticed slower playback start as well as a very persistent error message that kept telling me I didn't have permission to write on the drive. Even though I did. Get yourself a USB 3.0 external drive with a fast transfer speed and at least 7200-RPM. You won't regret it. Plus you'll have the benefit of a session drive that isn't dependent on your laptop. Great for back up purposes.

I do it all the time. Macbook Pro 2012, 16 gigs ram, 500 gigs Samsung SSD, Intel Quadcore i7 processor.

The reason you're having problems is you must enable Trim on 3rd party SSD's.

You playback and errors will be due to that.

16 tracks?!!
Not a problem... As with any system, you'll find it's limitations eventually. But as long as you make sure you have your backup discipline sorted (which everyone should in any case), then you'll be fine.
Go for it!!

With disk cache, you're hardly using the session drive anyways.

+1
If you use Pro Tools 12.2+ (disk cache) and you have not too many too large sample libraries this should be absolutely no problem.
A 2014 Macbook Pro uses one of those super fast Apple Flash drives so these are definitely fast enough for all this stuff.
Again, the only exception could be if you would want to use really super large sample libraries all at a time with Pro Tools, with really
many many tracks but I am sure it will work anyway. 16 tracks will be definitely no problem though.

Cheers.

MacBook Pro w/i7 - 16gb RAM - 1TB SSD

No problems at all with running everything from 1 disk.

Yeah we use our MBP's i7 both 8 and 16 GB with only internal flashdrives all the time on the road and in the hotelroom with 80-100 tracks, many VI and plugins without any issues. Yes there are a few workarounds at times with 100 tracks but it works great. The Avid recommendations weren't written when SSD's came out and beeing used by the masses. I wouldn't recommend anyone buy an old 7200 rpm spinner for recording when you can have SSD's.
