Great stuff folks! Thanks! The 421 was on my list specifically for gunshot and explosion capture. I suspect it will start off with much less ADR, if any. Out of the gates, this will be more of a teaching/learning setup as opposed to a paid production house. I just want to steer them in the right direction.

I've had better luck on gunshots with an omni like an RE55 or a 635a. The HF resonance in the 421 sounded weird when I tried it.

I'd consider going for a Nuemann KMR81i. We just made the switch from 416s and are very happy. Nice clear top end, more focused. The thing I don't like so much about the 416 is the rear lobe.

KMR-81 is what I mostly saw other than the Schoeps hyper-cardioid. You really don't want to use a shotgun unless there is a very high ceiling.

I know Fox uses the 81 on their Foley stage, my only complaint is it's low output relative to other mics of the same type.
