Re: NEW UPDATED Room Calibration for Film and TV Post
I know the scale relationship of db to Dolby Cinema Processor settings from Danijels excellent 'cheat sheet', but it only goes up to 7 being 85db.
Does anyone know how the db volume increases after 7 on the DCP? What is 7.5 in db for instance? Its clearly not linear up to 7. Thanks all.

Re: NEW UPDATED Room Calibration for Film and TV Post
Hi guys,
thank you for this great thread with lots of useful info ! Got a quick question, I'm on a simple stereo speaker setup in a small room. Calibrated both speakers to 77 dB SPL using the Dolby pink noise provided at the beginning of this thread @ -20 dBFS, played back in PT. My ART SPL-8810 SPL meter seems to be a bit unstable, so I am also using a miniDSP UMIK-1 USB measurement mic which in combination with sensitivity data and REW can be used as a pretty accurate SPL meter. Results match the physical SPL meter, but the measurement mic is more stable in the readings. My question is whether it is normal that the SPL values have a range of 1 - 1.5 dB difference when playing back the Dolby pink noise ? So when calibrating to a specific SPL value, what value would you choose to decide what level the signal is at (since the SPL values keep moving around) ? Are you rounding up or down ? In my first calibration I ended up using the average SPL option in REW, which averages the SPL values over time and gives me a fixed number... do you think that is okay ? Thank you for your help ! |

Re: NEW UPDATED Room Calibration for Film and TV Post
Forgive me if this has been discussed here;
But what do we make of the discrepancy between the Dolby DMU Pink Noise and Pro Tools built in sig-gen? Dolby's is quite a bit hotter and fluctuates more. They've recommended I use theirs but I can't shake the feeling my system may be over calibrated. I'd love some peace of mind on this!! Would hate to have one of my mixes play low. Thanks all |

Re: NEW UPDATED Room Calibration for Film and TV Post
Quote:
Use the Dolby -- the crest factor is important. In the end the "next room" will be calibrated by the Dolby tones. Not Pro Tools. The Pro Tools is only ever good to do some simple -- relative -- levels quickly. (And don't use the DSP mode of the sig generator plugin; there are phase issues that screw up the sound; use native)

Re: NEW UPDATED Room Calibration for Film and TV Post
In relation to the last few posts on this thread, I've noticed something about the frequency response of the signal generator in pro tools.
The attached image shows both on SPAN (set to AVG, 1/6 octave smoothing, Slope 3.00; to get a 'flat' visual). Basically, the Dolby Pink looks pretty flat across the whole spectrum. The Pro Tools Pink varies up to 2db at around 60hz and 1.7khz The SPAN plugin was duplicated with all the same settings, so this is a subjective hard comparison between the Pro Tools signal generator and the Dolby Pink audio file. I've read how the PT signal gen plugin isn't desired for various reasons, but don't recall anything about the frequency response. Quote:
With an RTA..wouldn't these frequency anomalies cause some problems??? Is this an intentional freq. resp for PT Pink? Or should it have looked like the Dolby Pink freq. response? (SPAN plugin: PT on the left, Dolby on the right) Last edited by DJEJPRO; 08-17-2022 at 08:05 AM. Reason: edited |
