Maybe, but UAD latency is pretty bad, and then this box would be for mix down only.

Also this is different from UAD because it’s actually sending and receiving an audio stream from the box. I don’t know how that works in this setup without PT being aware of the IO. It would need to sync up with Pro Tools somehow.

Thunderbolt isn't an analog path.

What do you think "32-bit DAC and ADC" is for in this box?
Same as what UAD does for processing but UAD doesn't do conversion and stays digital throughout.

The UAD buffer is dependent on the Pro Tools buffer setting (the one that doesn't matter for HDX plugs but does for native processing.) So 1 buffer in and 1 buffer return + any plugin processing time is the latency. Analog paths should have no latency and the DAC/ADC will add a small amount of latency. But the biggest latency will be what the PT buffer is set to.

Yes I know it’s not an analog path but the McDSP box would still need to sync up with Pro Tools to make sure sample rates line up. Although I don’t know, maybe it always comes back to PT at say 32bit/384k or something crazy high and the plugin just downsamples it to the session rate? Even then it would still need to know the source sample rate to make the proper analog conversion internally.

Maybe this actually runs as an HDX plugin?

I just hope this has latency like a HDX plugin or Hardware insert (or even Waves SoundGrid with a DLS) and not like UAD.

It would know the sample rate the minute it receives signal from the host DAW. If not, asynchronous sample rate conversion has been happening in systems for over 30 years. Which would also work.

It also has wordclock on the back which is at least one solution for clocking. Like any other audio interface.

It will not have HDX latency. That's a given. No external box can run at the latency as on-chip HDX plugins that are on-chip with the HDX mixer. To get to the thunderbolt, it has to transfer to the native engine.

As he said, will it have latency like Soundgrid, not like UAD.

Most likely no because Soundgrid DLS uses digilink to connect directly to the HDX mixer. There is no digilink on this box so no way to shortcut communication to the HDX mixer and will operate like any other audio interface (buffer in and buffer out.)

I know people want to grasp at straws on this but the Pro Tools framework is pretty clear on how it operates. If you have to transfer out of the HDX mixer, you are penalized on latency going to the native mixer. UAD would be all over this if there was a way around it. And, quite frankly, it'd be a lot of money to invest in development that would only cater to HDX customers for a small company like McDSP.
