Default PT 8.0.5 reinstall problems

Hey guys, I haven't posted in quite a while, but I've got a major issue with PT I hope you can help me with.

So I just built a new computer and had to reinstall Pro Tools, starting with 8.0, then 8.0.3, then 8.0.5. Now, when I'm in PT and press play in any session I have created previously, the sound is all garbled and sounds horrible. I assume this is a driver that is not working properly or needs to be reinstalled or something. Any help would be greatly appreciated.

Start with the "Help us Help You - READ THIS Before Posting!" link on this page. How about some useful info like a Sandra report??? Playback engine settings? Session sample rates?

But wait, what's this... "2 TB WD Green"... really? A WD Caviar Green P.O.S. drive. I hope you are not using that as an audio drive. Are you?

Just to second Daryl's post. We really need more information.

WD Greens are notoriously problematic with any program requiring fast data access.

Make sure your running the latest driver. That PT is set to run as administrator. Follow all the optimization tips.

And more followup. Do read carefully the Pro Tools disk requirements. You need a drive dedicated to audio/session files, which is a 7,200 rpm or faster HDD or an SSD. The WD Caviar Green is only 5,400 rpm and worse it does problematic power management things. By contrast the WD Caviar Black is a fantastic audio drive. You can also use a good SSD, but for high performance make sure TRIM is enabled (for drives that support TRIM) and over-provision the drive by about 20% (leave 20% of the drive unformatted).

This forum is littered with threads about people having problems (including the same as this one) caused by WDC Caviar Green drives. Now I cannot guarantee this is the cause but you really need to get a proper audio drive on this system and if that does not fix the problem then troubleshoot from there.

And you might get away with audio files on a boot/system SSD (try that for a quick test and see) but for most reliability it is best to keep them on separate drives, even when using all SSDs.

Thanx for the response guys.

I tried running sessions off my old 500gb Seagate 7200.12 (from old pc), and everything still sounds garbled, which leads me to believe its a driver problem or tweeks within windows that I haven't got to yet.

OK a lots more info would help. Do the basic trouble shooting steps of trashing prefs and databases. See the stuff under "Help us Help You - READ THIS Before Posting!" on this page. Most importantly post a full Sandra report--and do so with whatever disks and any other things you are using connected.

What is the session sample rate? You are running this with the Eleven Rack right (not some other LE interface)? Try a different USB cable, try a different USB port on the computer. Are you using a USB 3 or USB 2 port (try a USB 2 port if you have one)? What are all the playback engine settings. Set the IO buffer to 1024 and uncheck ignore errors does the problem go away? Does this happen on new sessions (not from template/not a copy).

So my new motherboard has an abundance of USB 3.0 ports and few USB 2.0 ports. I am using my 11r as my primary interface and it was plugged into a 3.0 port. Changing it to a 2.0 port fixed everything it appears.. so far. I have tested multiple old sessions and they sound crystal clear, as they should.

I will have now done most Win7 optimizations and will continue with the suggested Pro Tools tweeks.

again, Thanx Darryl and sunburst79 for the help.

Great. Be sure to keep that 7200 rpm drive as an audio drive, the Caviar Green *will* bite you on the butt sooner than later...

In case this helps anyone, I just got an Asus CM6870, popped in a SSD and tried Windows 8 with PT 8.0.5 and it seems to run flawlessly. I am able to open up and work on several large projects with no problem at all. There is all kinds of power and for example I use Strike for drums and I can now load the largest sample available. I am very pleased. I also tried for a quick test, recording 16 tracks at once. Didn't even break a sweat. I think I'll just pop in a higher capacity power supply and call it a day.

I didn't do anything fancy, didn't run anything as admin and I really didn't expect results like this. I was planning on going back to Win 7 but this thing is FAST!
