Default Upgrading my studio Need Opinions

I am in the process of upgrading my studio. My current setup is G4 867 w/001 PT5.1

I am trying to choose between G5 dual processor 2.7 or G5 dual core 2.3.
Which would give me better performance with a 002R?

On the plug-in side of things just trying to get the basics for now.
I was thinking of getting:
Metric Halo Channel Strip
Ozone 3
Altiverb

Or

Sony Oxford 6 Pack which includes EQ, Dynamics, Limiter, Reverb, Inflator, & Transient Modulator

Which would you get?

Thanks,
Len

"G5 dual processor 2.7 or G5 dual core 2.3"

Dual 2.7 is faster
depends what you want to install
one has PCIe and the dual 2.7 has PCIx which can fit many today's pci card like UAD etc....

I just bought a dual 2.7 because i have 2x UAD cards

any reverb with IR files is a nice thing (like altiverb)

You will need to upgrade your PT system also ! i see you have a Digi001 ?
NO G5 will work with an 001

cheers

Thanks for the input.
I guess I should made it a little more obvious in the post that I am moving up to Digi002R.
I only have about $1000 to spend on plugs and I thought for now the Sony bundle might be better quality for EQ, Dynamics and Limiter. I do plan to get more plugs later which would include Altiverb.

Thanks,
Len

Altiverb is fantastic, and you can download lots and lots of impulse responses for it. Many reverb boxes, compressors, mic pre's have had impulse responses done. www.noisevault.com

The Sony Oxford's are great as well. That being said, I don't own them. Why? I work in broadcast, and the sound I like to use for it is Focusrite's Forte Suite. Makes for a fantastic channel strip for broadcast (just has a cutting sound that I really like).

If you work on film or music, you can't beat the Oxford's.

Ozone 3 is very nice - but you'll need that Dual G5 if you're going to use it. It's 64 bit and a CPU hog, but you get tons of control, an EQ, multiband dynamics, and a pretty darn good maximizer.

What type of work do you do exactly? Might help to know what to suggest that would fit your studio.

jbussey,
Thanks for the input.
I downloaded the demo of Altiverb and simply love it. I can't download the Sony demos until I get an ilok. I guess I will probably go that route. I can't seem to find a dealer to get me the Sony 6 Pack anyway.
As far as what I do is mostly just local bands. I haven't wanted to push too much to get a lot of business because of my limitations in Pro Tools 5.1 on a G4 867. It is kind of embarassing when you are recording a band you get a good mix up for everyone then you ask are you ready. They say yes then you hit record and have to tell them to wait for the computer to start recording. In this situation 20 seconds seems like a lifetime.

Thanks,
Len

If your considering on getting the new 48-track upgrade the PT just announced you might want to hold off on Alitverb and check out their convolution reverb that comes with the package deal. Same cost as Altiverb 500ish, and comes with a whole much of gadgets...

rgriff,
Actually I am perfectly happy with the 001 but it is not supported on the G5 or in Pro Tools after 6.4.
Right now with the projects I have going I need more power. If something better comes along then I will upgrade to that if I think it is worth the $$$.
I may actually hang on to the 001 and the G4 867 as a backup.
Thanks,
Len

Well then you've only been hearing about the power harness. These things are really good, and once you get everything working, really solid. Even the power harness issue is a quick fix (irritating none the less).

This system sounds pretty good, let us know how it turns out!
