Default PT Mix internal mixbuss vs Soundtracs Solo Logic mixbuss

Just wondering whether I should buy this Soundtracs Solo Logic I'm looking at.

I know it will be handy for monitoring etc but if I mix down using this board with all my outputs coming down 2 x 888/24bit (24bit DACs), 1 x Apogee AD8000 and 1 x Apogee Trak2 giving me 26 outs to the board would the overall mix benefit form the analogue summing, warm EQ

or

do you think the Soundtracs Solo Logic console is not Pro enough and the internal mixbuss within DAE will sound cleaner, punchier, crisper and wider.

Opinions are what I need please

cheers

Si

The Soundtracs solo is pretty awful example of an analogue desk, if there were any real benefit to analogue summing (and I for one am not convinced) this wouldn't be the device to use.

Thanks Roland

what about the Soundtracs CP6800 or Topaz Project8

Is there any console you would recommend in the £1500 range

or do you think I should stay ITB

Hi,

I agree with Roland, the reason for summing through a desk is to gain from its quality harmonic distortion characteristics! and the sound you get when driving good analogue desks into the warmer peak zone on the mix bus etc. you won't get that with a cheap desk, you'll just get more noise!

Now I would recommend a
http://www.dangerousmusic.com/dbox.html

What most people experience is a wider stereo image and a tighter bass, but I would imagine this has to do as much with your converters and your mix as it does with the summing unit. There are some good reviews where people A/B these devices. Google it up.

Thanks guy's but gonna ditch the desk idea for a total ITB setup, using 2 macs, one with a native and one with a PTmix3 on OS9

tricky I know but after owning both systems in the past, I think the mixbuss in DAE is way better than the mixbuss using ASIO

so poss setup:

G5 running Logic 7 with RME 9652 for MIDI stuff, softsynths, NI Reator etc then sending 24ADAT outs to the PT OS9 rig for mixdown using the ApogeeTrak2 DAC for monitoring
this way I get the PT plugs&mixbuss and quality DAC for mixdown

Just need to suss the syncing issues out so that I could track some audio into the PTrig and still maintain accurate sync between the 2 computers

I'm thinking a Digi USD will help sync the 2 computers up

Cash is limited so HD not an option for me at present

any feedback on this possible setup would be a big help

cheers

The Soundtracs Solologic is hardly a cheap desk, and is HIGHLY revered as one of the best sounding analog desks around, period. In the short time they were sold in the US(about 4 years in the mid 90's), over 15,000 of them were sold, most all of them still in use. They are workhorse desks that are dead quiet, with excellent mic pres, a nice eq section, very flexable routing and a great analog summing sound. These consoles still sell regularly for $2-3000, a steal for 24/32 channels of great analog summing.
