Default Issue with Eleven Rack & 003

I've come across the issue where Eleven Rack fails to load during ProTools startup. Says unable to load Eleven, click no to continue or yes to retry.

In addition sometimes the 003 loads and sometimes it doesn't upon PT startup.

With the Eleven rack issue, I have figured out a weird work-around which seems to work... however, it's time consuming.

When I click no to not retry loading the Eleven, I go into the Playback Engine, set it it Eleven Rack, close PT, then reopen it, then the Eleven Rack loads.

I then select playback engine to Avid 003, close PT and then re-open ProTools and both the 003 and Eleven Rack load.

I have made no updates to my system (as you can see in my sig it's very old!) except I updated the 003 and Eleven drivers in an effort to get stop this problem, which it hasn't.

It all started when I moved and had to unplug everything. Now I'm moved into a new house and set up everything and I have nothing but issues getting either the 003 or the Eleven to load.

Another weird issue is I have disabled power saving mode on my Mac, yet I do have a screen saver. After leaving it up yet inactive for several hours, all connectivity to 003 and Eleven are dead. I have to reboot the whole solution and go through the steps mentioned above to get everything working.

If I abandon the Eleven Rack, I have no issues... the 003 loads just fine on every startup. However the stand alone editor will not run on my mac because it's 10.7.5.

Any help is much appreciated.

When you say the 11 Rack fails to load is the actual error message saying something like when trying to load the 11R "there has been a communication error trying to load the 11 Rack plugins - would you like to reconnect"? And if you hit yes the cycle just repeats?

If so I've seen that in both PT10 and PT11. The 11 Rack is still usable as an I/O device you just don't have access to the patch editor. How I cure that is to shutdown the 11R, count to 10 and then restart the 11R. I think that it sometimes loses communication over the USB connection with the computer for whatever reason. Seen it in OSX 10.8.5 and OSX 10.9.5.

Using two audio interfaces in OSX requires setting up an aggregate interface in OSX. I've never done that so can't help with that although Google should be able to.

Thanks for the reply Jack, yes that is the error message I get.

My work-around seems to do the trick. Change the playback engine to the 11R, then close and reopen PT. Then switch the playback engine to 003, and then both the 003 and 11R load.

I even downgraded the drivers, which is difficult because at this point the driver that for the 003 that is PT 10.3 compatible is not supported with my version of OSX 10.7.5.

So in an effort to keep this rig running for the next 10 years, I'll just not touch anything... and use my workaround. Even if Avid comes out with a fix, it won't be compatible with my old OSX.

Are you running an aggregate engine as set up in OSX? If you want to use both the 11R and 003 at the same time that is what you need to do. Also there will be no more updates for PT10.

Why not see if you can update to OSX 10.8.5? You should have no more driver problems with the 003.

i HOPE YOU SOLVED THIS.

I quickly figured out that if I have my 11-R plugged in at bootup it is the engine by default. PT does not even see the 003.

But if I have the 003 powered up at bootup and the 11-R turned off, the PT recognizes 003 as the playback engine, and then I can just turn on the 11-R and it works like a plug-in.

That solves it every time for me. I must reboot, however, to change the playback engine.
