Gobbler workflow...?

Hey all,

Just been getting into using Gobbler... Seems much better than Dropbox for sharing, but I'm having issues with backup, and I wondered if any PT users have some insight..?

My current workflow for my Audio drives is that I keep my current projects (about 30 of them) on a WD Velociraptor, nicely arranged in folders one for each project... Each folder might contain upwards of 100 .ptx files.

Gobbler however is only seeing one PT file (a template which I keep on the root directory), but for some reason thinks that this single PT file is the size of the entire drive (600GB).

It's therefore too big to backup.

What I'd love to be able to do is just backup the more current folders... But Gobbler doesn't see those... It appears to be the whole drive or nothing.

Any insight on this would be great.... How do you guys arrange your audio drive so that Gobbler backs up in a sensible manner?
I do get that I could only have one project per drive, but surely that's a bit limiting (and expensive on drives..!?)

Are you moving .ptx files away from their session folders? (Save-as outside of session)

Archives for me are my own drives (cloud), Gobbler primary for transfers.

No, but if I'm writing for a TV series then a couple of hundred ptx files in a folder isn't out of the ordinary...

Hate, hate, hate, hate, hate, hate the way Gobbler wants to organized PT sessions.

Messed with it during their BETA for about 5 mins, thought it was a mistake. Not sure WHAT the thinking is behind it. Too bad because I could really use this service mostly for its offsite storage aspect.

So how *does* it want them organised...!?

I'm happy to alter my storage workflow if it means I can use Gobbler for backup... But I just can't see how they're expecting you to organise your files to be able to back them up with their app...

Hi Y'all,

The short answer for Jon is that if you move the template file on the root of your drive into it's own folder, Gobbler will recognize your other session folders separately and you'll be able to manage them individually. Basically, when Gobbler sees a Pro Tools session file, it assumes that everything in the same folder is part of the same project.

More specifically:
If your files are organized like this:
[Project A Folder]
- Project A.ptx
[Project B Folder]
- Project B v1.ptx
- Project B v2.ptx

Gobbler will display:
Project A
Project B

But if your files are organized like this:
[Project A Folder]
- Project A.ptx
- [Project B Folder]
--- Project B v1.ptx
--- Project B v2.ptx

Gobbler will only display:
Project A

Gobbler can definitely do a better job of explaining this - we're working on that as we speak. But for someone like John who has 100 .ptx files in one session folder, this should make it easier to manage on a project basis.

Also note that Gobbler will back up any audio files which are referenced by any of the session files in the folder, even if the audio files are stored outside the session folder.

Okay - well this explains why I was having the same '1' file seen only on each drive. I had just stored a single ptx file for safe keeping in the root directory of my Macs 2 drives.. But what I need to know is WHY Gobbler's software running at all ramps the FAN of my MacBookPro Laptop to full speed??!!! It like an airport. The moment I quit the software - the fan returns to normal speed. What's this about? I'm running 10.7.3.. This makes me worry something's wrong with the Gobbler software. Any thoughts?
